The playhouse saga goes on . . .

Max Pearl who runs the Save the Coconut Grove Playhouse Facebook page posted this. I'm sharing it here because someone posted the Herald article in a comment in the Grapevine, which I wasn't too thrilled with especially since they quoted the article as if it was fact. I don't believe that Mike Eidson is bribing anyone. Whether the Herald article is slanted or not, who am I to say, since my articles are slanted, although the Grapevine is a blog and the Miami Herald should be an unbiased daily metropolitan newspaper. What this headline should say is that the Miami Commission derailed the demolition of the Grove Playhouse.

Here is Max's post:

Don't believe a word from Michael Spring's Herald hit man Andres Viglucci who should be fired for committing libel against Mike Eidson, falsely accusing him of bribing politicians. I tried posting a response in his comments section but he refused to post it. So here's my response to what this "journalist" wrote in today's Herald:

Andres Viglucci once again mangles the facts and omits half the truths. "The city has no direct jurisdiction" over this project, he alleges? Then tell me Andres, why was the county required to go to the city historic preservation board to approve its plan?

Eidson has no funding you say? Then what about the $10 million coming from the city specifically earmarked for Eidson's plan? Nowhere in your rambling, irresponsible attempt at journalism did I see you mention that the county also has to fundraise money it has failed to do. The $20 million won't cover all the costs of the Arquitectonica plan. Why no pressure on them to show the money?

The county applied for a state grant but was denied because their demolition plan was non-compliant with seven guideline requirements from the State Secretary of the Interior. So the county doesn't get that money, but Eidson's preservation plan does. But of course you didn't mention any of that.

You also never said one word about Michael Spring missing every deadline required by the state on this project or showing where the $20 million has so far been spent and on what. At two consecutive public meetings the Lieutenant Governor publicly reprimanded Michael Spring for failing to meet deadlines over the last four years. Andres, you mentioned none of that either.

Instead you had the audacity to insinuate Eidson is bribing public officials which makes me wonder if maybe you are being paid off to write such blatantly slanted, off the wall distortions of what really is going on behind the county's flawed Playhouse plan. By the way if you really want to show how even-handed you are, go check out the politicians being financed by Arquitectonica. Go follow the money if you dare. But we all know you won't, which is why you undermine your own credibility.

Joe Adler as quoted in Miami New Times 2012:

Whatever the topic du jour, Adler is all about eliciting conversation. He recounts a story about an audience member who once stopped him upon exiting a show. The theatergoer turned to the tenured director and gasped, "My God, how can you do that? Why would you put that onstage? What are you going to do next, show people having sex and defecating?"

Adler's reply: "We did that last year."

I'd love to see Max document ANY of his claims.
1. When and where was Mr. Eidson granted $10 million dollars? A link to commission minutes would suffice.
2. Please provide the record of denial from the state.
3. Please provide documentation showing the Mr. Spring missed deadlines required by the state. Documentation must include a notation of the due date, and notice from the state that the deadline was missed.

As I've stated numerous times over the years, a theater is not a building, a theater is people. The Coconut Grove Playhouse died the day the staff left the building. You're not debating saving a cultural institution, and never have been, just so everyone is clear on that.

If you want to burden Miami with another white elephant like the Olympia, that's fine by me. But the Olympia merits preservation on its own right, while the Grove has been cut up and remodeled so often that nothing of the architect's intent survives in the auditorium.

Hear hear CLJ, whoever you are. The Playhouse only serves as a placeholder at this point. When it will be condemned and what will take its place are of far more interest. We're so busy fighting over the entrails we have lost sight of what's realistically ahead.

I'm with CLJ, where are the citations for anything. You would think for such a bombshell of a story like the state denying the grant, there would be some documentary proof! If I was so against the county's plan and actually had proof the State had revoked the grant maybe I would produce that proof.... or maybe the Lt. Governor would mention it in a town hall.

Anonymous at 9:41, the Lt. Governor's statements are insufficient. Maybe you haven't noticed, but statements from politicians have this tendency to sometimes be wrong, or even false. And how many times has bureaucracy mishandled submissions? We need to be sure these alleged delays weren't at the state's end. We even need to be sure there were actual deadlines.

Put it to a referendum if Coconut Grove wants to preserve its history.

Adler's reply was referring to BLASTED (2011) - which won 5 Carbonell Awards including Best Play. Not smut!

Balsted (2011): Scene 5 consists of a series of brief images, showing Ian crying, masturbating and even hugging the dead soldier for comfort as he starves in the ruined room. Eventually, he crawls into the hole with the dead baby and eats it. The stage direction then reads that Ian dies. It starts raining, and Ian says "Shit". Cate returns, bringing sausage and gin. The blood seeping down her legs implies that she has paid for this by having sex with the soldiers outside. She eats and hand-feeds the rest of her meal to Ian, who says: "Thank you."

Art? I think not.
