Meet Nicole Singletary, new BID Exec Director

The Coconut Grove Business District (BID) has a new Executive Director, Nicole Singletary (left) who took over November 6, as Manny Gonzalez, former Executive Director moved on to the Wynwood BID as their Executive Director. I met Nicole for the first time at a merchants meeting in October where interim Executive Director Tim Schmand introduced her.

Nicole will be responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of the BID, a Board of the City of Miami that advocates on behalf of businesses and property owners in the commercial core of Coconut Grove. In this role, she will liaise with BID members, local government officials and community groups to ensure the continued vitality of the neighborhood; promote Coconut Grove as a destination, and establish a long-term vision and plan for Coconut Grove’s continued growth.

Nicole will help see through two active projects the BID is overseeing. This includes a multi-million dollar sidewalk restoration and beautification project along the district’s main corridors.

Nicole has a past connection to Coconut Grove, "For as far back as I can remember, I recall memories of going to the arts festival with my mom, dad and sisters. I fully intend on continuing that tradition with my own family someday. In fact, almost every piece of art currently in my apartment is from the arts festival," she said.

“Nicole has extensive knowledge of local, state and county governmental operations, and a proven track record in developing and maintaining relationships with elected officials, executive professionals and stakeholders,” said Miami City Commissioner Ken Russell. “We are thrilled to have her on the team.”

Her number one goal is to make certain the BID is renewed in April 2019 "in order to continue making progress on the goals set forth in the master plan and ensure the local business community thrives," she said.

For the past five years, she has served as the Communications and Community Affairs Director for the Town of Miami Lakes. In this position, she managed all marketing, communications and community outreach efforts on behalf of the Town’s 32,000 residents and 1,700 businesses, as well as represented it in meetings with industry groups, community associations, and the media.

I asked Nicole about the similarities between the Grove and Miami Lakes, she said, "Unlike most areas in South Florida, Miami Lakes and Coconut Grove are similar in that they are very tight knit communities where everyone knows each other and stops to say hello. I’ve only been in this position a few weeks and already it’s so nice to see some of the same folks day to day who smile and know your name."
