Full day of activities at Fit Kids Day

Fit Kids Day is Saturday, May 13 at Peacock Park from 10 am to 2 pm.

Fit Kids Day is an initiative that involves students, parents, schools, elected officials and community organizations to bring awareness to the current epidemic of childhood obesity. Today, kids spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using entertainment media such as video games, which leaves little time for physical activities. Only one-third of children are getting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day, an essential component of a healthy lifestyle.

Fit Kids Day is planned by school-age children serving as Ambassadors for the initiative. The Ambassadors are in charge of every aspect in creating a healthier and more active community. This event began in 2012 as founder Sofia Victoria de la Peña sought to create a day filled with outdoor activities and healthy food alternatives so that kids could proactively fight against childhood obesity. For the past couple of years, hundreds of kids of all ages have enjoyed all that the initiative has to offer. Fit Kids Day events include an array of activities such as soccer, yoga, martial arts, baseball, dance, relaxation techniques, lacrosse and more.

The event also offers healthy food tastings provided by local companies, all aimed at encouraging kids to lead healthier lifestyles. The success of Fit Kids Day in the Village of Pinecrest led to the creation of Fit Kids Day Key Biscayne in 2014 and the city of Miami in 2015. The newly appointed Ambassador Chairs, Catie Garcia (Ransom), Garett Kraft (Gulliver, Eduardo Fidalgo (Belen) and Mikayla Alsopp (Coral Reef High) are all helping Sofia Victoria accomplish her goal of making Fit Kids Day a nation-wide movement.
