Armbrister Park has toxins

Parts of Ambrister Park (4000 Grand Avenue) have been closed for toxic clean up. The Division of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) reviewed a report in October 2014 that indicates the presence of solid waste at zero to two feet deep. Artificial turf covers the area now. DERM claims that the turf is not "an appropriate engineering control."

Arsenic, lead, copper and barium were detected by TestAmerica, who performed extensive tests for the City of Miami.

The section of contamination is behind the home base in the Southwest corner of the park. They waited till now to remediate. They say it's a two week job. The remediation project started Wednesday, September 7.

This should be no surprise since the park is right across from the Old Smokey location. Old Smokey, the incinerator that created the ash that contaminated many Miami parks was just off of Grand Avenue, next to Armbrister Park, the fire department has a training facility on the site today. A University of Miami study that found a cancer cluster was shut down and there is no remaining data, so the Committee is out to get answers.

In April 2014, we reported that there is a large cancer cluster in the area it seems that for decades the toxic smoke and chemicals covered everything. Think of all the people who have lived there for generations; it's really depressing. One older lady was quoted as being born a few houses away from where she lives now. All those years in the Old Smokey neighborhood, all those toxins.
