Grove SLAM not happening this year
Fun times, 2012. |
"We saw a peak of 190 boats, 1000 anglers and over the years, about 100 bikini contest contestants. We awarded well over half a million dollars to teams from across the state and country. And we weighed 9 dolphin over 50 pounds," says Tony Albelo, tournement director.
Tony also runs the two beer fests - Sprung! and Grovetoberfest, the BBQ Fest and the Coconut Grove Seafood Festival as well as other festivals in the Wynwood area. Sprung! and the BBQ Festival have moved to Wynwood from Peacock Park in the Grove and Grovetoberfest and the Seafood Festival will probably be moving out of the Grove, too.
The Grove SLAM eventually is going to be turned into a fishing festival. "Some last minute changes to the new venue threw us a curve ball and we were not able to secure a location to host over a 100 boats," says Tony. "So there we were; Miami’s largest tournament without a home. Instead of trying to force a shot, we decided to table the tournament and festival for one year and launch with a much better handle on the venue."
So the Grove loses another event, but 2017 will bring a much larger event at another location to be announced.

I wonder how much all the complaints about grass have pushed out these lucrative events which used to draw attention and capital to the Grove.
Has the departure of Grovetoberfest and the Seafood Festival been confirmed? Would be a shame to lose those two.
Tony told us this morning that he believes he is going to move both festivals. It makes sense since has already moved SLAM, Spring! and the BBQ Festival.
Disappointing. It's a shame that a vocal minority of complainers have chased all the festivals out. Can't wait for the art festival to be next.
Do a few of your sour GRAPES commenting in the Grape think U are responsible for these moves? Some of U can't read! Our Seminole ramp can't handle 100 plus boats that participate in the SLAM fishing tournament, that's all, no more, no less. This isn't a conspiracy. If U sour GRAPES don't like high rises costing $1-M plus, why would you like several hundred $200,000.00, to $500,000.00 boats gracing our community? And upon returning about 25%, more or less of these crews hung out in the Grove spending thousands of dollars on booze and meals.
