Large development planned for Metrorail station

Prepare for more development in the Grove, or sort of outside the Grove. Grass River Holdings, part owner of CocoWalk was given preliminary approval by the County Commission to build a mega-project at the Coconut Grove Metrorail Station at 27th Avenue and US1.

According to the Herald: "At Coconut Grove, Grass River plans 40,000 square feet of retail, 180 hotel rooms, an 850-space garage, 180,000 square feet of offices and 250 rental apartments for what is a five-acre surface parking lot with 204 spaces. Grass River would pay Miami-Dade $500,000 upfront, and eventually $450,000 a year or 3 percent of revenues."

Better on that side of town than in Center Grove.

The pie is becoming smaller for those who long for a Bohemia life style in the Grove. I thought folks against development were crying foul needlessly. I thought most of those Mac Mansions looked Okay and most have 4/5 autos with many parked on the roadway! Then, condos began appearing on SE 27th Avenue, from Publix to Shell Lumber. 20 years later it takes about 4/6 green lights to make it pass U.S. # 1. on 17th, 22'd, 27th, 32'd & 37th avenues. The boat ramp is jammed full with traffic backing up past the red light two blocks West. But, more importantly it takes 10/15 minutes to purchase a 6-pack at Big Daddies @ 27th & Bird before the Dolphins kick off every Sunday, that's the straw that broke the camels back!? Jobie Steppe

I'd be happy to post a map showing the way to some nice, calm bucolic small towns that will never get crowded. There may be a few in rural north Florida ...but you might be better off in Idaho.

No, No, No, No bucolic small towns in N Florida or Idaho. The Grove has plenty of bucolic areas. # 1. Biscayne Bay, # 2, Card South Road, #33, Rhino Lounge, # 4, Channel # 2 Upper Lower Matacambe Key, # 5, Elliot Key, # 6, Old Rhodes Key, and my back yard where we Bohemians amass, eat lobster & stone crabs, make our own beer and enjoy an outback environment, I simply meant it was getting crowed out there, so, we stay out of traffic, other than traffic the Grove is our home and very, very fine. You've lost it Jobie. Only #1 is "in" the Grove.

"Jobie has lost it" Read the article/blog "Better on that side of town than in Center Grove". Jobie was kind enough to list those places on "that side of town" where folks who want, can go Bohemia. He mentions that those in the Grove who desire the Bohemian of the past can create their own such environment, which he has apparently achieved. Anon suggest "Jobie has lost it" and infers that Biscayne Bay is in the Grove. No, Coconut Grove borders the bay anon 7:14, Biscayne Bay definitely is not in Coconut Grove othererwise everyone would be wearing bathing suits wearing diving gear & U would see bobbles rising above their heads, along with some grouper, snapper and lobster and as we look about, we don't see anyone so ignorant in the Grove as to believe they are in Biscayne Bay.

Jobie listed a bunch of random locations after stating that "the Grove has plenty of bucolic areas."

And yes, Biscayne Bay isn't in the Grove, which is why I wrote "in." It is, however, the only area in his list that's anywhere near the Grove.

No, No & No, He said there are numerous bucolic locations at the homes of people who live in the Grove, and I agree since my wife and I created one such environment, with 6 small cottages surrounding our pool. Friends drop in, pull out some musical instrument, everyone, EVERYONE, brings something to drink, some bring foodstuffs, our dogs join in the music with howls and if your have never been invited to this Grovish bucolic Bohemia jam, well, to bad because you wouldn't have fit in anyway.

This is what Miami needs (I'm serious), higher density near existing mass transit links. This means less traffic on useless-1, and more foot/uber traffic into center grove.

Liz, there's no list; i.e., there's just folks who have and who continue to project those characteristics reminiscent of what many commentators lament about "the way the Grove use to be". Well, it still is if you maintain such a mindset, so their friends simply show up, jam, sing, drink, eat as if they were a family of friends; that's all. You don't find these folks at bars or eateries, you most likely find them down by the shrimp boat docks, or the boat ramp, or someone says lets go to, and you end up eating lobster, stone crabs, snapper or grouper, don't pay a dime, down a few suds and presto, you just experienced the old Grove. I bet you Tom knows a few!? Jobie Steppe
