Inside Vizcaya: Watercolors

James Deering built Vizcaya with leisure and creativity in mind and it didn't take long for artists to visit and be inspired by the surroundings. Among them were artists who created commissioned pieces specifically for Vizcaya, including the sculptures on the iconic Barge by Alexander Stirling Calder and the frogs and iguanas on the Frog Fountain by Charles Rumsey. But there were also artists who came to visit and created art for pleasure, such as John Singer Sargent, prominent watercolorist.

Sargent spent months as a guest at Vizcaya, painting everything from the Courtyard to the Barge and staff beach. These paintings help give us a sense of how Vizcaya looked almost 100 years ago, but also remind us that at Vizcaya, the inspiration is endless.

On Saturday, December 13, Vizcaya is presenting a tour of Sargent's work from 10 am to noon.

Explore Vizcaya's grounds finding our muse in nature, and paint watercolors of our own under the shading canopy of a historic banyan - perhaps one that Sargent painted under himself?!

Tickets can be purchased here and with your membership, you're free to keep wandering after the program, in case you're looking for more inspiration. Includes access to the house and gardens after the class.

Members: $7
Non-members: $25
