I heard the Cheesecake Factory was leaving but didn't hear anything about Chili's. I never eat there anyway, as I prefer smaller non-chain restaurants, but I'm still a bit surprised.
The center grove is de-mall-ifying. In my opinion, that's a good thing. The question is whether Cocowalk can be revitalized into something good. Should it be torn down and start from scratch, maybe a mix of ground floor retail, office and condos? Can it be renovated, maybe turning the upper floors into offices and turning down the 90s mall vibe of the ground floor? I don't know. The "old grove" is never coming back to that corner; but that doesn't necessarily mean we need to be nostalgic about losing a Chili's--particularly if the future might bring something better than what we had.
Cocowalk is another white elephant just like the old Bakery Center in S. Miami. People want quaint neighborhood shopping, not behemoth malls....unless of course you're Merrick Park then that's a different story altogether.
First of all, I am Hispanic. Cocowalk, is an obnoxious den of loud outdated Latin music. You can't even hear yourself think. Why would people go there? Turn down the volume, offer reasonable rent so businesses can profit while Cocowalk profits, and patrons don't get ripped off. I don't get the 3am club thing either. Get real. What's next? Another Palacio de los Jugos?
Tom,
I posted this Tuesday night and you refused to put it up.
Nice scoop.
I don't post anonymous gossip that could ruin a business, just because an anonymous person with no proof leaves a comment. Sorry. Next time have some balls and sign your name. I get comments daily announcing the closings of local businesses which are always untrue.
And more empty space. Hopefully another more unique restaurant will move in soon.
The areas new developers should learn from the mistake of building Cocowalk in the first place. Oh well, we'll see.
No more Chili's or Johnny Rockets?! OMG. Where can a hard working, plastic new "Grovite" get a greasy burger these days? If it weren't for our beloved McDonalds and Burguer Kings, we'd be starving. In the $pirit of our new Groovey Village, let's build a big Wendy's right in that J.Rockets corner! (Closes at 10pm, no music).
Nothing more old Grove than that Burger King (50+ years) and the McDonalds on McDonald street.
Sigh. I actually liked the Chili's. I bet there's a new operator that is not renewing lessees.
I frequently ate at Chili's with my kids. The burgers are great and children's menu is a good value. The view of the Grove from the terrace is outstanding.
That restaurant did not sustain itself because it seemed a little stale, in my opinion.
I am certain that a "Yard House" style eatery would pack them in.
... Funny, someone mentioned the "Bakery Center". As a realtor, I must agree that the land where Cocowalk sits is worth more than the mall itself.
This is a sign we need change back to when we had bars jazz nightclubs if chilis could not make it that says it all. Duffy's must be very happy then again less business less people coming to the area???? It all went down after the 3am issue. we used to have. Los Ranchos. Banana joes, Quench nightclub, Oxygen nightclub, Flavor night club, Mezzanote, iguana cantina,Hungry sailor (sandbar) two movie theaters, Bars open past 3 am now nothing is open and if so people leave by 12 am. We have nothing to give to visitors just nice small restaurant that are full for sunday brucnch.
Chain restaurants are as inviting as strip malls. Good riddance!!!
We need a Popeyes and a KFC for the booming new "Grovites". Where are the fast food developers when u need'em? Also, just 1 Taco Hell by Milams ain't enough for our lovely, plastic new village.
Commodore Plaza almost always appears busy. Why? Greenstreets, Lulus, Georges, Strada, Lokal, Darbar, the new organic gelato place. WE have Harry's Pizza and the Eating House coming soon. Not a one of them a chain. All unique, all places you want to go to yourself and to take your out of town guests. We need (and want) businesses that cater to Grovites not just to tourists and college students. You can get drinks at most all of the restaurants - we don't need bars and clubs in Coconut Grove. We don't need more Chili's and other chains. Just hope the developers, who are sure to get their hands on some of the properties, will respect what's working. Probably not though - look the big glass enclosed monstrosity that is going up in place of Scotties.
Good riddins! Never went there.
"riddins" really? If you're going to comment, make a little effort.
It's not the chili's was great or a grove staple, but more empty square footage... Cocowalk is just a giant looming failure.
I do like the theater though. It's quite nice, but I probably like it because it's kinda empty.
The person that said Cheesecake Factory is leaving can you please give proof, I'm so sick of people so against chain restaurants, get the f over yourself. half the people here don't even live in the grove.
