Successful first week for Drive-In movies

Have you checked out Blue Starlight Urban Drive-In yet? It opened Monday at the Coconut Grove Playhouse parking lot. It's really been a treat for these summer evenings -- a drive-in theater right in our neighborhood. It's a throwback to the 1950s.

Check out their website for the movie roster and you can buy tickets there. You can also pay cash onsite.

There are theme nights and fun movies like "Grease" sing-along. And a first rate concession stand. Fonzie would love it.

When I was a kid in Ft. Pierce, FL we had a free outdoor movie with a trailer that looked much like this one. They sold hot dogs, pop corn and other stuff to pay for the free movies. I forgot about it until this blog. All us poor folks went, probably about 150 folks. It too brought the community a little closer, thanks. Jobie Steppe

Kind of expensive... especially for a family. They need to work on their sound system. Folks in cars have no problem hearing, but those of us that paid (a lot) and rode our bikes in or walked in weren't able to hear very well.. even 8 - 10 feet away from the speakers.

This said: I'm sure they will work things out. Great idea and nice execution over all.

Note to new owner: Just remember that while every business owner dreams of hooking the tourists with all the big bucks, in my opinion the businesses that succeed in the Grove over the long run are those that focus on the working class folks who live in the neighborhood.

Working class folks do not live in coconut grove. You can't by a shack for under 600k

Anon 5:22: I was a handyman for 20 years in the Grove. There are many properties with rental units attached with rents @ about $600.00 monthly and many units listed as "Want to Share", plus the anchorage, plus, the communities that surround our community with rents even lower. However, I didn't see the prices related to this outdoor movie concept, but $2.50, should be the max to get in and the price of all goodies should not be priced over "THE GREED PRICE", otherwise they're gone. I think it's nice to have the Dive-in here in the Grove but I totally concur. The price is to high and the sound is too bad for walk-ins sitting right in front of the screen.

If you look online you can find discount deals for the drive in, that's what we did. If you bring 4 adults it averages about $12.50 a piece and you can bring your own food and drink. It's a good time for people looking for some kitsch and nostalgia. I had a good time.

Great idea, bring U own food, why not? I tried that several times at regular theaters who each time called the police. I get so tired bucking the system, but I gotta keep trying at age 71.
