Town Hall meeting to discuss FPL power lines

On Monday, May 5,  State Representative José Javier Rodríguez will host a town hall forum on Florida Power & Light's plans to build high-voltage transmission lines along US 1.  This issue has been on the table since 2009.

FPL wants to place "100-foot towers carrying 230-KV high-voltage power lines right up along South Dixie Highway, alongside the Metrorail."

It is important for the community to be heard. The placement of FPL's transmission lines could be determined by Florida's Governor and Cabinet. Their decision is anticipated soon. FP&L's current plan is to place these high-voltage transmission poles, approximately 80 to 105 feet in height, along US 1 from Pinecrest to downtown Miami. If built, such transmission lines will impact our community. Please come and allow your voice to be heard.

The meeting is from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Avenue.

If it is up to lunatic Rick Scott then it is a done deal, especially if it is to impact people's health and at the same time feed the development craze downtown and Brickell, by the way Sarnoff hosted a fund raiser in Coral Gables for him and Republican Governors Association recently

"Lunatic Rick Scott", "Sarnoff hosted a fund raiser in Coral Gables". Governor Scott can't be a lunatic if he overbilled the U.S. Health Care System by $7-B, and when caught walked away with $300-M. Who cares if Mr. Sarnoff hosted a fund raiser in C Gables! The subject matter of this particular blog are the power lines, Hello, the power lines. [IF] high power transmission lines are proven to cause human health care problems they cannot go up, not to mention ugly, ugly, ugly & unsightly. And even underground and/or overhead they represent the same dangerous electro magnetic fields. This is surely a major issue and the people must present their case intelligently and leave out Governor Scott and Mr. Sarnoff.

There is science behind the health issues, and science refuting it. There is no dispute that they are noisy and that the constant background noise is a stress which also can cause health issues. The way the lines will look is the least of the issue. FPL's request to the state is for two separate issues: 1) these transmission lines, and 2) permission to add 2 new nuclear reactors to Turkey Point. That has its own issues, but this meeting is about the transmission lines. We wanted them put underground and FPL refused. They want these lines so they can transmit some of the extra power to downtown Miami and most of it past Miami to sell to others north of us. Pinecrest, Coral Gables, and South Miami have been working hard to fight this. The City of Miami's position has been less aggressive. It's hugely expensive to propose an alternative corridor and every corridor has its drawbacks. Personally, I love the Everglades and nature but if there's a choice I'd rather have lines run through the river of grass than next to homes. I can't make this meeting due to work demands, but it is a hugely important issue. Everyone who can go should go and show their support for the local governments along US-1 that are working to protect us from this mess.
