Fathers's Day Pilates for Golfers workshops

Pilates in the Grove has come up with a special mash-up for Father's Day. It's Golf and pilats combined.

Golfers are now turning to pilates to keep the body in balance and improve performance on the course. Both golf and pilates are mind-body activities that share the same basic principles of motion.

Pilates in the Grove’s Father’s Day Packages for Golfers include a workshop addressing some of the most common movement faults, a personalized golf assessment/evaluation, and a pilates-based workout sequence to do before heading out for a day on the green, with Pilates in the Grove Owner Christa Gurka, MSPT, an orthopedic physical therapist specializing in pilates-based fitness, who works with many professional athletes.

“From a biomechanical perspective, the golf swing is a complex and unnatural movement that works the whole body—but not in a symmetrical pattern,” says Christa, who is certified in golf-specific physical therapy and has served as staff therapist for numerous PGA and LPGA golf tournaments. “Addressing physical limitations through Pilates exercises can help create symmetry, coordination, muscular endurance and increase range of motion. Pilates exercises establish coordinated muscle-firing by retraining core muscles, including deep stabilizers, hip flexors and extensors, hip abductors and adductors, and spinal flexors, extensors and rotators.”

Golf Workshop:
Correcting Common Movement Faults will be taught by Christa, and will cover some of the most common faults in the golf swing such as backswing sway, chicken winging, reverse spine angle or dipping, and poor swing rotation, as well as how to assess certain physical limitations that lead to these faulty patterns and how to correct them. Father’s Day Packages include the workshop and a 45-minute, personalized assessment of strength, flexibility and range of motion as it pertains to the golf swing. The session will introduce the client to pilates exercises and education geared toward golfers, and the golfer will receive an individualized home exercise program to use in preparation for a day of golfing.

The workshop takes place on Sunday, June 22, from 10 am to noon, and again in September (September date to be announced).

Personalized assessments can be scheduled during regular studio hours. A $100 package includes the workshop (choose one date) and assessment, and a $200 packages provides an additional private Pilates class or two group reformer classes.
