Old Smokey and the cancer cluster

Regarding the post below about the time that it's taking to clean Blanche Park, maybe it's a good idea that they are taking their time. David Villano from the Miami News Times revisited the Old Smokey incinerator site and neighborhood. It's sickening (literally) and scary how the incinerator was able to operate for so long contaminating everything in site. He paints quite picture of what the neighborhood was like over the century.

There is a large cancer cluster in the area it seems that for decades the toxic smoke and chemicals covered everything. Think of all the people who have lived there for generations; it's really depressing. One older lady was quoted as being born a few houses away from where she lives now. All those years in the Old Smokey neighborhood, all those toxins.

So maybe Blanche Park needs to be decontaminated and maybe that takes time, but what about Carver Elementary and Armbrister Park and all those neighbors who live at ground zero?

Anonymous said...: This is happening worldwide, which doesn't translate into a wrong that can be easily corrected. As a diver I've seen 1st hand how rearranging the flow of water throughout the Everglades translates into an 80%reduction in edible fish & lobster production throughout the water flow area, namely mangroves. This kind of abuse is also leading to ice melt, warmer temperatures, harsh weather, droughts, flooding, etc., etc., etc., etc., & my hat is off to anyone who even THINK they could make a difference. And the people who invented Old Smokey & operated it are about as guilty as those families who burn down rain forest for a strip of land to grow some food to eat.
