Pooper Scooper scofflaws

A friend sent me this story out of the Boston area, he thinks we should enact it here in Coconut Grove. I have another friend who is not a friend to man's best friend, I think he would love it, too.

In Ipswich, MA, a small coastal community, somewhat like Coconut Grove, they're considering fining people for not cleaning up after their dogs by using DNA testing. When they find random dog droppings, they would test them for not following the pooper scooper law.

PooPrints is the company that creates the database and is then able to match it to the offending pooch.

It's expensive if every dog is tested, $34.95 each to have the mouth swabbed and then put in the data base and then another $75 to process the offending sample.

This seems like a HUGE waste of money.

yep, that should be part of the licensing process when you get a dog. $35 is not a lot of money, and as far as the testing, make the fine $200, and it's more than covered. Generates some revenue, and even a portion could be given to animal shelters. Win-win.

I used to think the pooper-scooper laws were silly. But as our areas become more dense, and small dogs become more popular, I've had a change of heart.

On South Beach you can't walk 20 ft. without coming across a turd. It's gross, unhygienic and unhealthy.

And unfortunately at the my own home, there appears to be a very large dog (judging by the size of his turd) that enjoys crapping on my driveway. I get to see it every morning, sometimes it sticks to our tires, etc...In case Mr dog owner is out there, please curb your dog on Secoffee Street!

So we would have to pay city employees to wander around town looking for random poop and testing it? And the employees would not even be sure they were collecting samples of dog poop most of the time, as opposed to raccoon or cat poop or whatever else? This seems ridiculously impractical and it would be much more expensive than it sounds. Enforcement would be tough, and the actual offenders who do not pick up after their pets probably do not even have licensed and registered animals, so it would make no difference except to add poop-testers to the payroll and increase taxes and the cost of registering your pet.

I've had an idea for awhile, I just wasnt sure who to propose it to. If the garbage cans that the city provides allowed us the option to have put on our cans "OKAY for dog waste" or "DO NOT throw dog waste"I feel more people would throw their dog waste away, since the problem with dog poop is having to carry it around for your entire walk, and it smells and it ruins the rest of your walk. I do find myself if the situation calls for it, leaving the waste hidden until I walk back so I don't have to carry it with me for the next hour. If they had a sticker the city could put on our cans I feel it wouuld provide people with more places for waste, therefore providing people like me (a responsible dog owner) frequent places to throw waste away throughout my walk. Of course there are the lazy people, but there will always be lazy people and theres something called Karma that puts them in their place if we don't.

It's funny, to a point! When changing my oil I rolled through some bad stuff and hauled it into my home - now isn't that funny? Over the years I've asked three people to not lead their dogs onto my property to poop, otherwise it was okay. They ignored my request so I patiently, over several months picked up this fresh steaming poop stuff, followed them each home and threw it into their home. Did they get pissed or what, but they then respected my wishes.

Regarding the issue of having to walk around for an hour with your dog's poop in hand - that's easy. Either toss it in a trash can (even if it is a neighbors) or toss it in a predetermined yard waste collection spot - which on my block is every other house.

I love the idea... I am a person who drives with baggies for those owners who tell me they forgot...Dog poop is about the owners of the dogs ..and yes the owners should be fined, but more like $500. per poop left behind... and about carring it around ...Shame on you that you did not think about picking up poop before you made an investment in a four legged animal....I also think these people that leave their dogs inside all day barking is the saddest thing, why have a dog???
Please let get this pooper scooper law passed soon, bEfore our whole town goes to SHT....gail beckham

There are many pet owners who show respect for others & then there are those normal misanthropes who use their pets to disrespect other peoples rights. Oh, it's against the law to place fecal matter, human or pets in trash cans because it ends up in land fills polluting ground water and the stuff creates infestations in children when pets poop all over their yard(s). Take the time to observe who allows their pets to poop in your yards and confront them as they placing shit where you live. And folks can live around shit and piss, otherwise bad things can happen to your health.

Once an offending dog is identified its owner should be swabbed for DNA on the other end.

Theres been a lot worse in garbage cans than animal feces. Never the less, I would choose animal feces in a land fill over my shoe any day. ALSO, if theres arsenic in our soil anyways whats the worry with a little poop water?

I've seen a lot worse in garbage cans than animal feces. PLUS I'd rather have it in the can than my shoe. ALSO, if our soil is polluted with arsenic anyways, whats wrong with a little poop water? ALSO - For every situation thats resolved to better the general population there are alwys the people who need to complain. There is a solution out htere for everyone and if someone is trying to solve the one that benefits everyone then there are always going to be people who complain. Let them complain, there literally is nothign to complain about, its dog shit. It needs to be in the trash, yes the trash taht goes to the landfill. The same landfill your poop went to or your babies poop. But I'm sure if your so worried about the landfills you probably potty trained your dog right?! If you don't like it then eat shit

These comments are funny! To state a fact is not a negative/complaint. People & other life forms die every second, minute, & hour everyday & that's a fact; you 'all are right; who knows what combination of stuff & events causes what? And I still don't appreciate people who bring their pets onto my property to leave some shit!

The problem is lack of enforcement. When was the last time a citation was issued in Coconut Grove for not scooping up or throwing trash and cigarette butts on sidewalks, streets and on the beach? FIRST start educating people to stop trashing our town and then issue citations. No one has the right to make others put up with their trash and dog shit.

So why are Dog Owners so privileged that they have been granted enclosed pet parks (some are even waterfront as in Kennedy Park). They feel they have the right to have their pet urinate and defecate on our public streets, swales, parks and neighbors lawns. Shouldn’t other pet owners have the same rights as well? When will the ACLU, PETA, SPCA and Humane Society file a class-action law suit to defend the rights of pet owners of cats, hamsters, rabbits, turtles, cockatiel, iguanas, pythons and apes? Don’t they also deserve pet parks as well?

That link to the county ordinance is great. I wish these kind of things went out to the citizens - especially new residents. I think education is a huge part of the problem.

Dog poop may seem trivial to those owners who don't pick up after their pets, but it is truly a nuisance to the majority of us. And since not many stories get this much action, perhaps perhaps this topic should be taken to the next level with Com. Smirnoff. He does love money-making opportunities after all!
