Coconut Grove is gearing up for the fifth annual running of Bacardi Miami Sailing Week (BMSW) presented by EFG Bank from March 2-8, 2014. Six days of racing, which includes the 87th Bacardi Cup, has combined with the well-known hospitality of Bacardi to make this event a focal point on many sailing calendars.
Miami’s global art scene has also influenced the event which will continue its tradition of including a public art component as part of BMSW.
Orchestrated by Cushy Gigs’ Alex Vahan, the exhibit this year will take place at CocoWalk and will showcase the creativity and unique style of 10 street artists whose work can be seen at Wynwood Walls, the must-see art installation. The 10 artists work in the graffiti and street art genre and, for this exhibition, will take inspiration from the sea and sailing to create Wynwood Sails Color the Grove.
Each artist will work on canvas shaped like the jib of a sailboat with the results displayed at CocoWalk, from March 2-8, daily between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm. Additionally, two live performances will take place on Sunday, March 2, and Saturday, March 8, from 4:00-8:00 pm, which will allow the public to witness the artist’s creativity first-hand as they transform the blank canvasses into art.
Previous BMSW exhibits have featured the work of respected marine photographers Franco Pace of Italy, and Onne van der Wal and Cory Silken of the USA. The highlights of their racing images from the 2010 to 2013 regattas will be displayed alongside the canvasses created specifically for Wynwood Sails Color the Grove to juxtapose “the City meets the Sea” for this unique art event.
