Peacock family marker being installed

A large marker will be installed at the Peacock family plot on Tuesday, April 23 at Miami City Cemetery.

One of the relatives, Suzanne Tripp, has purchased the marker for those family members who are there but not listed. The existing large, beautiful tombstone was dedicated about 100 years ago.

The Peacocks had the first Inn in Miami, actually Coconut Grove. Charles and Isabella had a big home and so many visitors wanted to stay with them that they added on to the house and made it an inn. Mrs. Peacock held picnics to raise money for a Sunday School.

The Peacock Inn was across the street for the Coconut Grove Woman's Club, which is still in its same location. The Inn was behind where the Glass House is today in Peacock Park.

One of  the club's committee members, Mona Ball's mother, was a companion to Mrs. Peacock before her marriage to Morgan Gilbert. Mona's mother knew Miami pioneer Julia Tuttle. too!

Come out and be a part of history. The ceremony is at 11 am. at the Miami City Cemetery (1800 NE 2nd Avenue).
