The Scotty's Saga goes on
Anyway, the Herald has the story here, but to follow that up, even though Wessel says he does not owe the money, Al Crespo has found some interesting paperwork that shows Wessel just may owe the taxes, $2.5 million worth.
It doesn't appear as if any money has ever been spent at Scotty's on the food, tables, bar, walls or roof. As Wessel rakes in the money on poor service and terrible food, he doesn't feel the need to give anything back.
Prime waterfront property for free. Nice if you can get it. But then again, when you lease or rent from someone, in this case, it's the City, isn't the landlord responsible for paying the taxes? Isn't the this part of the monthly rent, passed on to the person renting the space? Why didn't the City ever arrange the monthly rent this way?

A certain presidential candidate who doesn't like to pay taxes?
Guess what? He released his tax returns today. Turns out that he paid more than he had to.
No doubt you will be posting an apology. Any. Minute. Now.
swlip: Romney paid more than he had to because he needed to be consistent with his previous claim that he had paid "at least 13%" each year for a while. He reserves the right to claim the unclaimed charitable deductions on a future tax return, which he will almost certainly do in 2013 after he loses the election and people care even less about him than they do now.
To get back on topic, if Scotty's Landing (I've never been there) is such a dump (so I keep hearing), how do they manage to stay in business? If people are really offended by the purported tax evasion (which we should be, if legitimate), why not organize a picket instead of blogging us to death? You know, people taking government into their own hands (see yesterday's protests in Libya for reference).
Yes, I love parentheses.
Please STOP with the national political commentary. I normally love your blog, but when I see those sort of hyper-partisan, inaccurate, and completely unrelated comments, it really turns me off. This is supposed to be a neighborhood blog, so please keep your political comments to those affecting local government. I will stop visiting this blog if I continue to see stuff like that.
And frankly, I dont' get the hoopla anyway. He paid more than he owed, (not to mention 30% of his income went to charity!) and even if he does take the refund (which there is no evidence he will), he still will have paid what the law requires. How many of you have ever paid MORE taxes than the law required. Give me a break. Now let's get back to what this blog is supposed to be about: THE GROVE.
Having the tenant responsible for County taxes is in most leases.
It was/is specifically stated in the CGSC lease, both the one from 1980 and the most recent one.
It is part of the Rusty Pelican lease as well.
I reviewed some of the leases while researching and working on the CGSC lease.
I do not recall the detils of Scotty's lease. It is an older lease, I believe going back 35 or 40 years?. Maybe the tax issue is not specifically mentioned. (And perhaps while it is on newer leases!)
Marc
PS I don't like paying taxes either, but I do!
Romney has not released his returns from 2009 and prior. This is because he took the safe-harbor provision offered by the IRS in 2009, which allowed people and corporations illegally hiding taxable income to declare it and get no penalty.
Please feel free to research it on your own. Be informed, be smart, and don't vote for that liar/ tax cheat.
