Why are no Grovites part of RFP committee?

How  is  it possible that no Coconut Grove resident or business operator has been appointed to the RFP Selection Committee? Don’t we Grovites deserve an opportunity to have a voice in our very own community? Didn’t we have a revolution over No Taxation Without Representation?

We should consider comparing Rusty Pelican, Monty Trainers, Scotty's
Landing and the recent five submitted RFP submissions. What are revenues to City of Miami for each?Scotty’s has been paying around $18K a month. I suspect that no other city leased property generates as much. Isn’t that enough? For years Monty’s got away with paying little rent or nothing. Locals seldom patronize Rusty Pelican or Monty’s. The Grovites do not want a Tiki Hut, another Monty’s or Rusty Pelican in the Grove. They would rather have Scotty improve the place a bit and add a few items to the menu.

Look at  the success that Lalo has had with his recently opened Peacock
Garden. The Grovites would welcome a successful and caring restaurateur like Lalo as well. Or perhaps Lalo and Scotty could join forces and make an even more successful restaurant together.

But please don’t allow another Monty’s or Rusty Pelican to get a
foothold on our waterfront and ruin it for us locals. The Grove deserves better!

I'll say what I've been saying all along, I don't see what all the hype with Scotty's is. Every time we have been there it has been disappointing. The only thing it has going for it is the view, which will still be there for a new place. The Herald had a letter to the editor that said it best. "Scott Wessel has had the opportunity to make more than just minimal bare bones improvements to Scotty's Landing and Grove Key Marina for decades. I find it interesting that as his lease is soon to run out, only now is he willing to invest millions in making improvements that have been desperately needed for years. It's time for Wessel to step aside as new and innovative proposals are considered"

Yes, because you don't appreciate it, because you don't feel it's the right atmosphere it should be changed.

I happen to like the view, the people, the music, the laid back, non-commercial feel of the place. Every single person I know (and I've lived in the grove for almost 50 years) loves Scotty's. No exceptions.

The sad thing is that money talks and Scotty's will be destroyed to make way for another pay-by-the-hour, two story, Cocowalkesque monstrosity. Another mall. What is it with Americans and malls?

Welcome to Coconut Grove. Miami's next big outdoor mall. Dadeland with no roof.
Yay!

I agree with that last comment. I live in the grove and I go to Scott's every so often. Everytime I go everyone in our table always discusses how horrible the place is and how much potential it has. The only thing its good for is cheap beer. I'm not sure how anyone can think the food there is anything but just edible. I'm excited for something new in that location.

If Harry loves Scotty's so much, and claims that locals to go to the Rusty pelican then why do I have emails from Harry when he was "Film Ambassador" touting the surprise birthday party for The Mayor at the Rusty Pelican that he was involved in organizing? If he loved Scotty's so much then, why didn't he have it there?

Also, has anybody bothered to ask whether Grove Harbor Marina is up to date on it's payment and taxes?

The CrespoGram is diligently working on a story about all of this, and as usual, I'll have documents and information that nobody else bothered to get.

Hi again!
Same Anonymous here that made the outdoor mall comment to ask a question of the last post.

If you don't like Scotty's why do you go? Are there not enough choices in uptown Grove for you? What is it about this location that people keep saying things along the lines of "It's a great place but it needs to be changed".

A lot of people in the grove are stuck in the past. What attracts the older folks in town (i.e. scotty's) is not attractive to new generations. There's a reason why Monty's does so well and why young people flock to that place for happy hour and other events. If we continue to be stuck in 1980s/90s coconut grove, it will eventually seize to exist. We need to evolve as a community and as a town!

As a business owner, I believe in the addage "If its not broken, dont fix it." It seems to me that Scotty's was doing just fine. So, why make major updates? Did people complain that they were unhappy with the decor, menu or prices? I dont know? Every time I go, its packed. This isn't a sign of unhappy customers. If I owned his business, I wouldn't change a thing, and risk losing my full house.

Now, if my repeats started to not come back, people started to complain about the quality of the food and my place was starting to empty...well changes would be in order. This is Business 101.

So, now that we've voiced our opinion, and Scotty's sees that updates are in order, why not give him a chance to do just that. I hear, he is willing to do the updates.

To me, it just doesnt seem right to take the business away from him just because someone else promises something similar and promised the county a few extra bucks. Something seems very Un-American about that. He built a thriving business in that location. Let Scottys keep his business and grow.

Not everyone wants another tiki bar or higher priced menu. Personally, I like the unpretentious flip-flop atmosphere, cheap beer and decent fish sandiwich at a reasonable price. I DONT WANT ANOTHER $19 A PLATE DINING EXPERINCE.

I'll be so dissapointed if this space becomes another Rusty Pelican. Other than its view The Rusty Pelican is not really that good.

Evolve as a community my arse.
Evolving involves getting people between 21-30 drunk en-masse and sending them out on the roads or do you think they all take the bus home?

No, this is just a desperate grab for the last strip of viable, new construction friendly property in the Grove. After this property goes there are no more new areas to cultivate. The fact that it's a waterfront property is just icing on the cake.

As a fellow Grovite, I second this comment, exactly.

Any way we can kick Scotty's out and replace it with Lokal? That place is well run and they know what they are doing!
