She picked up the litter, now what?

As a walker in the Grove, I am acutely aware of the litter problem.  But, the real problem is the scarcity of garbage pails.  I am inclined to bend down to pick up litter, IF THERE IS A GARBAGE PAIL IN SIGHT.  Otherwise, I'm not going to pick it up and carry with me to my final destination.

This is especially relevant on my four mile power walks, when I least want to carry litter more than a block before being able to dispose of it.  I believe that 85% of litter occurs because there are no garbage pails in sight when people are done with their stuff.  Another 10% is wind borne, and 5% is from the true litterbug, who doesn't give a s..t.

However, is it more economical to put garbage pails on every corner, and have them collected regularly, or hire workers to pick up the litter?  The former would be far more effective in the fight against litter.  I guess someone would have to study the question to get the answer.  When I give a big party, I provide multiple garbage receptacles and ashtrays.  At the end of the night, I have to pick up almost nothing.  Expand that scenario city-wide, and we may have a solution.

Maybe we can ask citizens to donate specified garbage pails.  They can choose where they want it placed, and they get their name on a plaque fastened to the can!  Who knows what can happen!  Just a thought.

Best regards,
Deborah Crisp

I know this is off topic, but its very frustrating driving through the Grove early in the morning these days. Almost 100% of the bicyclists in the Grove CONSTANTLY break the traffic laws. I understand that they deserve to use and be on the road. I have nothing against the fact that they use the road, but they must understand that they too must obey the traffic laws. I see them run red lights, run stop signs and dangerously cut in front of cars continuously all the time. This is extremely dangerous! They are not exempt from the traffic laws just because they ride together in large packs. The traffic laws apply to them as well and they must understand this. I will be contacting City of Miami Police to tell them that this should start ticketing bicyclist as it is a public safety concern. I hope things change for my safety and theirs.

I applaud Deborah for being that rarest of Miami commodities...a good citizen. However, I disagree with the assessment that 85% would use trash cans if more were available. I agree we need more trash cans available. The bigger problem are those who treat the world as their trash can. I have seen countless people empty their cars of trash right in the streets and throw whatever they have in their hands even with trash cans close by.

I would love to see better enforcement of the littering laws to the point of making littering a deportable offense. That may change some of the bad behavior so prevalent in our community.

I was walking my dog in front of the Barnacle when a foreign tourist, threw down her lit cigarette (not 5 paces from a garbage can) on the ground, and started to walk away. I stepped in front of her and smiled, and looked down and asked "I was just wondering if you were going to pick that up?"

She stooped down, picked up the cigarette, and walked it over to the trash can. In this case, the problem was the person, not the lack of receptacles.

@7:14 - You don't see any potential problems with someone throwing a lit cigarette into a garbage can?
