The Grove SLAM! fishing tourney starts today

If you hear a lot of rowdy drinkers and see skimpily clad women around the Grove waterfront these days, it's the annual, 11th annual, in fact, Grove SLAM! fishing tournament.
It starts today, May 3.

They call themselves the "biggest and funnest" tournament in the fishing world. First prize winner receive $10,000. And $5000 goes to the single heaviest Dolphin.

Teams pay only $495 to participate, teams consist of four members. And the big part is that there is a $1 million Mahi prize. The correct tag and fish must be caught during the hours of the SLAM to win. Yesterday, in 450 feet of water east of Key Biscayne they tagged and released the Million Dollar Mahi. The location coordinates were: 25.37.060; 080.04.860. You can still register at the captains' meeting tonight, May 3 at Shake a Leg at 8 pm, which follows the Kickoff Luau, which starts at 7 pm.

Dolphin is the only species of fish eligible and boats must stay out of Bahamian waters. The tournament winner will be the boat that has the highest combined weight of five dolphin. The largest dolphin weighed will win the largest dolphin prize.
Free Photo and Race Day is back. That is Friday May 4. You do not need to race to participate in the photos. Just head out with all the other boats and get you photo taken. If you have never participated in this, do yourself a favor and do it this year... it's free!

And Saturday, May 5, starting at 6 pm, the boats head out for the big fishing contest. The weigh station closes at 5:00 pm, all fish/boats must be in by then. The awards ceremony starts at 5:30 pm. You don't want to miss the Miss Grove Slam contest either. That starts at 6 pm.

Even if you're not in the tournament, it's a crazy long weekend of fun and worth a visit to ground zero, Shake-A-Leg at 2620 S. Bayshore Drive. All events take place there.
