Should Coconut Grove's Halloween be reined in?
There were problems in the Grove last year, due to the large and rowdy crowd, including a police beating of one man, and because of that, there is now talk of reining in Halloween. Some feel that the crowd is getting too large and too out of hand and it's becoming a problem for the police to enforce.
After the nonsense and shooting at the past weekend's Urban Beach Week in South Beach, the subject is being brought closer to home. Leaders of South Beach are now trying to figure out a way to control that.
Council member, Kate Callahan, will be holding a discussion and then forming a committee to discuss the Grove's Halloween situation.
As you know, thousands of people converge on Coconut Grove for Halloween night. There is no real event put on by the Grove, it just happens. The police end up closing the streets near Grand, McFarlane and Main Highway out of necessity.
This is going to be an important meeting. Many businesses make a lot of money that weekend and especially on Halloween night in Coconut Grove. Changing things may affect that greatly. Business owners and politicians have been invited to the Village Council meeting, the public is urged to attend, as well.
The meeting again, is at the Sailing Club (2990 S. Bayshore Drive) at 7 pm, Thursday, June 16.
