Joshua Guitierrez, Orlando Lopez and Steve Afanador are part of the Ruben Dario Middle School Jazz Band, which performed yesterday afternoon at the Windisch-Hunt Gallery. The award winning band was there to perform for the Peace Flags project.

Band leader Aramis Gonzalez led the band who played everything, including holiday songs, which really were great on a cool fall afternoon.

They're middle schoolers with a very professional sound, they would be great for some of our holiday activities around the Grove, maybe the Merchants Group or BID could arrange them to perform this season at some of our seasonal events.

Virginia Aleman, Sharon Melendez and Valentina Orrego are part of the band.

flags9
So are Alan Aldao, Jonathan Rojas, Brandon Martinez and Jarvi Lucena.

flags10
Kayla Caba, Nathalie Pirela, Natalie Nunez and Kassandra Santiesteban play incredible music, way beyond their years.

The jazz band played before and after the flag making activities.

Lots of kids and adults created Peace Flags for the project. The flags will travel to Panama City's Vision Quest Gallery and will be unveiled to support those impacted by the BP Gulf oil spill. They will then travel on to Haiti in 2011. Money was raised by donations given for each flag that was created. The Peace Flags were part of Wellness Week and were included in the recent visit by Lama Rinpoche.
