Window dressing on empty storefronts
Here are two empty storefronts, which do you prefer the images of sailboat bay as window dressing or the plain white paper that says, "no one is here?" Of course the choice is obvious. It might be a good idea for the empty storefronts (there are too many in the Grove), to make the windows a bit more pleasant with the images rather than plain paper, or even worse, newspaper up and down the windows.

No question the sailboat photos are a big improvement. Now what we need are some colorful murals on the metal shutters that are pulled down overnight on places like the storefronts in Florentino Plaza and the HighGear/RED building at McDonald and Grand. Maybe a design contest and some donated paint.
i'd love to see data on this issue. not sure the realtors would hand this over or help someone compile it, but i'd like to see the following
all empty retail locations + size + rent/price
all empty office spaces + size + price
what the retail spaces are zoned for
who owns them
this way someone could dump this data into a google map, and make it easier for prospective tenants to browse through.
some spaces (news cafe) have been empty for almost a decade!
For that matter, why not fill these spaces. I mean is reduced rent not better than no rent?
It will make the spaces more attractive to buyers and visitors to have these spaces filled at reduced / temporary rates.
I already know of people that would be glad to fill these spaces.
heard that Yardhouse may be moving to a Grove location? any info?
From your mouth to God's ears.
Grape,
I think us grove geeks are going to undertake this as our side project to make this data open/accessible to everyone.
I don't see the Yardhouse moving from Merrick Park to the Grove. Would have been nice though!! I think the new movie theatre will bring more people back to the Grove.
The Grove has a lot to learn from Coral Gables. Their BID is in charge of dressing up the windows and I know for a fact the owners there have even offered free rent until the space is leased to start up business, who are able to get on their feet and then actually pay rent, either in the same place or elsewhere in the vicinity. Like I said, the Grove has a lot to learn and a lot of pride to be swallowed.

Coral gables owners are offering free rent??? would love to find out more about this as I know of a ton of startups in the area that would happily occupy their spaces. contact me through my blog brianbreslin.com
This is a good start. Now the BID should IMMEDIATELY design and print window liners, and install them if necesssary. If necessary, give the small shop owners the materials to paint the front of their businesses if they'll supply the labor. One abandoned storefront begets another. They should also crack down on derelict buidings like the incomplete Tuscany building with code enforcement I guarantee if you give someone with some common sense $10,000-20,000 to spend on the business district and someone from the city who will help get something done, they could make a huge difference. The grove is sufffering because it LOOKS like it's suffering and the fix is not brain surgery, just common sense and a few dollars in the big picture.Make a list, and as Nike says. stop talking about it and "JUST DO IT"
PS Paint the black "telephone booths" so they look like they belong in the grove while they're at it. I bet there are some local artists who would do it for free or a reduced cost.

never said Yardhouse was moving, meant to say that another location might be in the words, I hope so, it's depressing to see all these empty stores
