Marking The Grove Spot
Here are before and after photos of the new Grove Spot at 3324 Virginia Street. The photo on the left is Michelle Niemeyer taken in September at the location. We used it in a story about all the empty restaurant spaces, and now here is the finished spot marker for the new bar/restaurant called The Grove Spot, owned by Olav Smit, opening this week, with Michelle and AnnaMaria Windisch-Hunt standing in front.
For about a month, AnnaMaria had planned with Olav to create the buoy marker on the spot. Apparently the city was not too crazy about a large sign that Olav wanted to place on the building (zoning laws and all) but they were not opposed to an image, in fact they liked this image. So Fred Hunt started early yesterday on the project.
I had known it to be AnnaMaria's project and I asked Fred about it. His reply was, "You think she would be out in this weather getting her dainty little hands cold? She sent her lacky instead," meaning him and meaning that it was chilly yesterday morning.
But eventually AnnaMaria showed up (later in the day) and they both completed the job. Of course it is a replica of the Key West Southernmost Point buoy. Apparently these colors are the international symbol of a marker and now the symbol and buoy marks The Grove Spot, which should be opening later this week.

Best of luck to Olav. I'm sure place will be great.
Now, don't want to be accused of being a hater, or only being negative, but why a replica of the Key West buoy?
Why not a palm tree with coconuts, or a peacock, or something 'Grove-y'? We're always talking here about the Grove's uniqueness. Why copy key west?
