Committee formed to discuss bar closing times

Good to see that the City has formed a committee to discuss the last-call, bar closing times.

On the committee are Miami Police Commander Jorge Colina, attorney Tucker Gibbs, Lourdes Slazyk from the City's Zoning Office, and local restaurant owners Jose Goyanes and Steven Perricone. It's a shame that no one from the Grove who is actually affected by this was asked to join the committee or anyone from bicycle circles who feel that earlier bar closing times will save lives. But it's a start.

Maybe if it were kept as a Grove issue and not City wide it would be different. Remember Same AM? Now everyone gets affected.

"It's a shame that no one from the Grove who is actually affected by this was asked to join the committee or anyone from bicycle circles who feel that earlier bar closing times will save lives. "

Most cyclists do not care about bar closing times in a small area of central Grove. We just don't. It's irrelevant. People who are going to drink and drive do that anywhere, at any time. Most Bikers ride after 6am anyway, the vast majority. Or during daylight hours, after 7am. The biker who recentley got killed, that happened after 8am. What difference would it have made to have closed a few bars only in Central Grove at 3am, instead of 5am? None. The problem is infrastructure, lack of bike lanes, signs, lack of education for all, lack of Law Enforcement. Has nothing to do with a dictatorial, draconian 3am closings rule, after so many Decades of Freedom for people to choose when, where to go and what to do with their nights. Regardless, people will continue to stay out late right next door, where there are no stupid rules, and drive back to the Grove. CI

This is a joke. Sarnoff put together a committee that will tell him what he wants to hear!

Hey CL, thanks for letting us cyclist know what we think...oh wait..you have no idea what we think. Whether we agree or not, you have no right to speak for us..

huh? I know dozens of cyclists and speak with them all the time. I've been cycling in Miami forever. I have a right to talk about what we talk about, using a little thing called "common sense", --apparently the least common of all senses-- while detailing the reasons WHY this 3am dictatorial stupid closings are the least of cyclists' concerns. Now what's your point? NONE. Next time, be precise, and offer some of your own ideas about any specific subject. You said absolutely nothing about it here. CI

So you got a City official from Zoning, a restaurant owner from downtown (Goyanes owns Mia and another restaurant), Steve Perricone, who is a restaurant owner from Brickell, and Tucker Gibbs, who Marc hired to lead the Home Depot fight several years ago, and who is clearly in support of Marc's "vision" to run a committee that is going to determine whether downtown Coconut Grove gets to have the same closing time as the rest of those areas of town enjoy. Why am I not surprised? Of course the fair thing would have been to actually include a restaurant owner from Coconut Grove, but I suppose it would have been hard to hand pick one, since all of them support Same a.m. for the Grove.

Interesting choices, Pericone's has a 6 seat bar, which hardly makes it a meningful voice and Mia is the site of a shooting last week directly across from the Saint's hotel. I'm surprised Sarnoff didn't put the owne of Club Space on the committee too. The only one on there who makes any sense is Commander Colina and he has to worry about keeping his job if he says the wrong thing. What a joke.

Don't you people understand that it's totally irrelevant what the composition is with this committee.
It could have 6 John El-Masrys on it and it wouldn't make a difference at all.
The King of liars will do absolutely nothing to change hours of operation in other parts of his district. This is all for show.
Even Czarnoff knows that a token justure must be made in order to placate all those MADD, cyclists and old washed up hens that support him.
Sadly, in the end it'll just be the Grove that's effected.
Isn't that right Commissioner?

I thought Lourdes Slazyk took early retirement. Anyone know if this is true?

Bob R,
Just curious, Are you for the 3 am closings because of the bicycle issue (ie. drunks hittling riders)? Or for general safety, morals, clean streets, whatever? And are you for 3am for everyone else in Miami also, or just in the grove?

The Clubs in the 24 hour district are the most dangerous. People are driving long distances to reach these clubs. I live in this neighborhood. I see the parking lots full of cars. People are drinking until all hours of the morning and then are driving home. This is not a neighborhood where people walk from hotels. Marc Sarnoff if you truly care about safety in the community you would have these clubs to stop serving alcohol at 3am.
