sounds like a fantastic idea.
It is my understanding that this roast pig cook off was proposed to be between the Rotary Club and the Grove Chamber, and it is one aspect of a day long celebration throughout the Grove that will also include hot dog eating contests and hopefully, a BBQ cook off as well. It would be great to have apple pie bake offs as well. All is in the planning stages and input and ideas are welcome.
I think it is great to celebrate the birthday of our country, and its great diversity, by building a celebration around the different flavors from our splendid variety of ethnicities-- let freedom of expression ring.
I only have two words to say about this great idea for a lechon cook-off. CAJA CHINA.
freakin awesome. i second Harry's comment. caja china. I want to see them all over the place, and have the neighborhood smelling of delicious pork.
Excellent! The "Cochinillo" or "Lechon" as we know it here, did originate in Spain, many ways of preparing it. They're excellent at 'Ideas' on Bird, and you can tell'em in advance how you'd like it for some special occasion. On the street would be great. This is a great recipe there:
"Cochinillo confitado al estilo de Segovia. Crisp, confited suckling pig scented with cinnamon, cloves, citrus zest, and rosemary"
Segovia style. CI
We lived in North Carolina for a few years and a couple of the bars had a pig pull (a roasted pig cut open with plates next to it) on Friday happy hour(s)...something to think about for the locals. Nom, nom, nom...
Roast pork, al-right
Gotta love those Kosher Cracklin's
Cubans cook a great pig, the flavors are the best.
Well now that the cats out of the bag, Grape you either have good spies or people have big mouths, I'll send you an e-mail with the details. Suffice to say, the community will love it.
Willie Vega July 4th committee chair.
To all:
This Fourth of July will be better than ever. It will be a week-end long event with it's day long grand finally held at Peacock Park. One of the many surprises is the "Bring It On Cook Off Challenge" between the Coconut Grove Chamber of Commerce and the Coconut Grove Rotary Club. It started when yours truly "Willie Vega" Exec Director with the Chamber challenged Steve Arch-current President of the Rotary to a lechon cook off. I thought what a better venue than the July 4th event. It will be judged and the winner will get the bragging rights until the next cook off. We will then sell the food to the public and the proceeds are being donated in behalf of both organizations to a local charity which will be announced shortly.
The Chamber of Commerce, which is hosting the Peacock Park event, is pleased to be working closely with the Rotary Club in the cook-off.
See you all there,
Willie Vega - Committee Chair CGCC
Grape - I just the details of the cook off. what do you think about making it a new link?
