New outdoor gym to be unveiled at Kennedy Park

Press release just in:

Commission Chairman Marc Sarnoff, representatives from Paradise Gym, the Downtown Athletic Club, and 24 Hour Fitness will unveil brand new state-of-the-art outdoor workout equipment at Kennedy Park (2400 Bayshore Drive), at 11am on Wednesday, January, 13.

Commissioner Sarnoff will also announce a new partnership with several local gyms in which fitness trainers will be available at no cost for residents in exchange for promotional opportunities within the park.

“Men’s Fitness Magazine named Miami as the fattest in America for 2009, our populations scored an F in the overweight/sedentary category,” says Commissioner Sarnoff. “This is unacceptable. Especially with our tough economy, you won’t find a better price than zero to work out with top notch trainers on high end equipment.”

Aida Johnson, a Coral Gables fitness trainer helped to create a similar program in Chicago and is contributing ideas to Commissioner Sarnoff which are aimed at getting residents motivated to work out. “The TriActive Fitness equipment in Kennedy Park is second to none and provides an excellent total body workout,” says Johnson. “I encourage everyone to make the most of this opportunity.”

Not to undermine the fact that this money was spent at Kennedy Park, which benefits me personally and the value of the property I own, but I think if you looked at the demographics you would find that the highest levels of obesity, etc., are in the least affluent neighborhoods in the City, not the most affluent. Contrast the cited article with others that find Miami to have the best looking people in America. How is that?

I hope our local gyms get a lot of new business from this partnership, and they should. The nearby residents are likely consumers of those services anyway, and may be more likely to go to those personal trainers later if they get to know them at the park. It's great marketing and good for local business.

This is a great start, but I hope the City expands the concept to other parks in the Grove and in the City of Miami where the nearby residents cannot afford to hire personal trainers and need the assistance more than those in close proximity to Kennedy Park.

I saw that stuff on a recent run. It looks pretty cool. Now I just need directions on how to use it all. It looks like it uses the persons actual weight to facilitate traditional gym equipment like lat pull downs. I love working outside so I look forward to using it.

Just keep your dogs out of it people. There is a sign saying no dogs, but as well all know in this city that means little.

yes, because I hear in Overtown they are itching for personal trainers and a snazzy workout area!

That last comment is rude. Completely agree with Michelle- think its a fantastic idea but would be nice for other communities to benefit that need to be educated on nutrition and fitness much more than many of us who are lucky to be able to afford to belong to a gym...also not sure what the "promotional opportunities" are- what does that mean exactly? I also think the insanely overpriced vegan raw hoo ha across from CVS would serve the community better a s a co-op of sorts to help the people in the Grove that need it have access to fresh and healthy food. This is supposed to be a hippy town right? Always feel like its a big slap in the face to those in the Grove that can't afford a 20 dollar avocado but that's just me.

Hey -- I've used the equipment already, and since I walk through the park on my daily walk, I see a LOT of people also using it -- and it would appear that not all are so affluent -- that's a bunch of effluent that we should cast aspersions on this gift!

I have used the equipment, it ia pretty intuitive, using your own weight for resistance.
I think it's a great idea, and anyone can get to that park by foot, bike, bus or car, so you're paycheck is not an issue.
Seriously you guys have way too much free time on your hands.

Mr. Sarnoff likes to work out, so he gets a gym for the park that is closest to his home. He also likes dogs so there is a dog scultpture in the park across from his home. Oh yeah, he likes slow traffic so there was a very expensive traffic circle put by his house. Oh one more, he didn't like home depot's attempt to come close to his house so he darned well spent a ton of time and energy on trying to stop that one.
I am just wondering if he is helping other District 2 communities other that his own?

re 10:30 now this is getting ridiculus. I am with you on the traffic circle, but suggesting this change in the park was for him is a load of bs. In fact I have never seen the man at this park and I run there several times a week.

Some equipment has been on the park for a couple months now. I've been running through there most days for many years. It's ok, not great. Outdoor equipment, not too challenging at all. There are only 3 that I can use, the others are a joke unless it's for children or older people, which is ok too. Try the ab pull-ups, on the inclined platform, now there's a challenge.
It's a good thing, can't criticize Sarnoff there. CI

The real way to exercise, however, is just running, walking fast, swimming or biking. You can also Kayak here, 10$ rentals at Shake'a'leg. Unfortunately, running and biking remains a hasle here in the Grove. Careful with those ankles and with the cars around Kennedy Park, or throughout South Bayshore drive. It's a mine field, a veritable Lunar landscape.. No such thing as bike lanes. 3rd worst City in the USA for that.

One day, hopefully, the City will fix that mess, including main Hwy, Douglass, S. Bayshore, etc. Meanwhile many of us prefer the much safer and smoother Key Biscayne to run or bike. CI

In the Grove it appears to me booze is out of style, the food is great, a lot of culture, namely the arts, fantastic parks, beautiful bay and fancy boats, quaint shops, several good markets, plenty of sunshine, well stocked top class lumber yard for do it yourselfers & professionals, a few drinking holes, post office, unique and conventional drug stores, boating ramp, TV series, safe streets----etc----etc----etc and this Grape Vine. Someone(s) doing something right.

Hey did anyone see the city budget in 2010. We are broke!

At least some laid off city employees will have time to work out in the park with the new equipment.

The priorities of our government at all levels is mind boggling.

just be grateful that things are improving in Coconut Grove, not everything is for everyone, but damn give it a chance- you bitch when things get done and you bitch when they don't get done. I don't even live in Center Grove but am glad the equipment didn't go in Center Grove, because then you would be griping about that.

Downtown Athletic Club (Downtown) and Paradise Gym (Coral Gables) are not even in the Grove. So why are they involved and not the gym's in the Grove. RED, The Workout Spot etc...

Oh yes I know Ron Nelson and the owner of 2 gyms not in Coconut Grove are friends and Rowing partners at the Rowing Club.

There are two new parks in Little Haiti. They cost the taxpayers over $50 Million. In fact, the taxpayers are paying for those parks every day. It is called interest on the debt service and salaries for park staffers. The money comes from taxpayers downtown and on Brickell and in the waterfront communities.
