Chamber comes out with 3 am / 5 am results

The results are in from the Chamber of Commerce poll regarding the 3 am/5 am issue.

They sent out an email to their 156 members and received 52 responses. From that, 42 were for 5 am and 10 were for keeping 3 am closing times.

Of the 10 for keeping 3 am, five were businesses and five were residents.

The Chamber will announce the results at tomorrow's Village Council meeting.

Given that two-thirds of the membership (104 of 156) didn't vote, one could easily conclude that Chamber members don't see this as a "real" issue.

As a member of the Chamber, I didn't receive any e-mail for the vote(unless it went to my junk mail), or I would have voted for 5am.

How many of the respondents live in the Center Grove?

As I have always opined here, let's go for a 24/7 hour open bars here, open restaurants open pizza places. This is not Cuba or North Korea. And we don't need Papa Sarnoff to tell us when to go to bed, or where to go out and have a good time. Law Enforcement: that's the answer. 24/7 I don't even understand the 5am previous rule. In Europe or New York you do whatever you want at ALL hours if you behave and respect the Laws. It's called Freedom. CI

I do remember that you used to be able to go and do anything at any hour of the day or night... that was one of those great things about living im Miami, the city lived always.

Those days are gone now and until I saw this post I never realized it was the government telling us we can't. I have been sadly enlightened now. I think it should be 24/7 in all business districts in the country. Public demand will govern what the people want, doesn't the government have real issues to tackle like health care, crime, education improvements and economic issues.... it would seem to me they should be far too busy to care what time we go to bed.

Atena - well said. I couldn't agree more.

Oh, and "Bob" - I have no idea what you're trying to say. What's done? let what go? how why? If you're gonna go through the effort of commenting, at least say... something.

I've been informed that several chamber members (all of which were in favor of 5am, several of them bars)didn't recieve any email. So, it appears that this would have been even more lopsided in favor of 5am.

My question is: WHAT IS SARNOFF'S REPLY TO ALL OF THIS?

Hey Atena, what is your address? The reason I ask is, what I want to do at any hour of the day or night is shoot off fireworks in front of your house.

What's that? You don't want to tell me?

Don't harsh on my freedom, man!

Anyone anywhere can belong to the Grove Chamber of Commerce so people out of Coconut Grove are voting telling us what we have to live with - doesn't seem fair. It should have gone out to Coconut Grove businesses/residents only who are members.Someone in the Gables or Westchester should not be telling us what is good for the Grove.

Anon 1:39 - why? what purpose does your illegitimate aregument serve. You, I and every other reader knows that ATena meant was "go and do anything [legal] at any hour of the day or night..."

She probably meant within the bounds of law and decency, but the latter can often differ, so it's tough call.

Why would you choose to be the way you are? Is it fun to be petty?

Is allowing bars to serve until 5am likely to result in fireworks on your doorsteps? Doubtful.

Grow up.

MARK AT SANDBAR-

YOU MAY WANT TO ALERT THE CHAMBER THAT YOU DID NOT GET THE EBLAST, WHICH WAS SENT OUT ON THE 15H OF DECEMBER AND AGAIN ON THE 30TH.

PERHAPS IT WENT INTO SPAM OR PERHAPS YOUR CONTACT INFO IS NOT UP TO DATE.

THE VOTES WERE TALLIED ON THE 4TH. IN SPITE OF THE VOTE TAKING PLACE DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE HOLIDAY, WHEN A LOT OF PEOPLE HAD THEIR EMAIL BOXES SET ON AUTO RESPONSE FOR BEING OUT OF THE OFFICE, PONE THINRD OF THE MEMBERSHIP VOTED, WHICH IS A PRETTY GOOD RESPONSE.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT OF THE 156 MEMBERS, 19 ARE "RESIDENTIA" NON-BUSINESS MEMBERS. 10 OF WHICH VOTED. 5 VOTED IN FAVOR OF 3 AM AND 5 IN FAVOR OF 5 AM.

THIS MEANS THAT OF THE 10 RESPONSES FAVORING 3 AM 5 THERE WERE ONLY 5 BUSINESS LEVEL MEMBERS.

HOWEVER TO MAINTAIN ANONYMITY THE CHAMBER STAFF DID NOT DIVULGE WHETHER THESE BUSINESSES WERE INSIDE SD2 OR OUTSIDE SD 2. (THERE ARE MANY CHAMBER MEMBERS THAT ARE NOT NECESSARILY LOCATED IN SD2 OR EVEN IN THE GROVE).

BUT IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF THOSE WHO DID VOTE WERE IN FAVOR OF EXTENDING TO 5 AM OR PROVIDING THE GROVE WITH THE SAME AM AS OTHER AREAS OF DISTRICT 2.

This is all a lot of what I call
"mental masturbation"!

3am - 5am - 1am - 24/7 !! So what!

The economics of staying open will dictate the hours for business. I'll bet that the world will not come to an end, even if we go 24/7.

Only however, if we enforce the LAWS already on the books. Noise ordinance, public drunkeness, etc.

If we enforce already existing laws, 24/7 can work, and then let us concentrate on more important things.

I vote for 24/7 also, and I am sure most 5am'ers would also... either way almost no place can remain open 24/7 so its more of a marketing slogan than what will really happen.

I'm a big proponent of letting economics dictate business operating hours. Nevada does just fine with 24/7 liquor licensing. How? Smart zoning. Same with the UK.
