Thursday Town Hall meeting regarding power lines
A Town Hall meeting on power lines and nuclear expansion is tomorrow, December 10, 7 to 10 pm, at South Miami City Hall (6130 Sunset Drive). The Coconut Grove Village Council has a sub-committee very involved, chaired by new Village Council Member Stephen Murray.
Knowledgeable speakers will present information on:
– New biomedical literature on health effects of power lines on residents
– Turkey Point's history of safety violations and equipment malfunctions
– Risks of new reactors to our aquifers and Biscayne Bay
– Effects of new reactors on Everglades restoration
– Economics of nuclear power generation vs. renewable energy
– Citizen options
At the last meeting, FPL was very rude and most of their reps did not even bother to show up. This meeting should be interesting.

At the last meeting, presentations were made about the project (two new nuclear reactors and high voltage transmission lines running up US-1 to downtown). Most presentations were made by state and county employees; only one FPL rep even spoke. Afterwards, people were allowed to ask questions that they submitted in writing, which the county and state officials tried to answer. They did not have the information to answer a lot of the questions. FPL would not answer any questions before the public forum, but was only willing to speak privately with people at the back of the room, where it would not become public information. It was the most bizarre "public meeting" I have ever attended.
This meeting is hosted by environmental activists who are against the reactors, the lines, or both. Some of them are university scientists whose names I recognize as attendees of the "public forum" who made comments and asked questions. Some of the things they brought up were very interesting.
FPL is a great company and an asset to the area. There is nothing dangerous about power lines. This is junk science just like global warming.
I suppose Kowster's remark comes from her/his vastly superior scientific studies. ::eye-roll::
Regardless of all that, I have to call into question the choice to erect more overhead powerlines in our hurricane-proned locale.
