More peacocks being removed in South Grove

Peacocks are being removed by trappers in the South Grove, mostly on Battersea Road. The neighbors have called a company who is putting traps out and then collecting the fowl and sending them down to the Redland farm again.

Problem is they are only taking some of them, mostly the male peacocks and leaving the females (peahens), which is causing problems with the birds since they are losing their mates. Sadly, they have been seen trying to communicate with their own reflections in windows on front doors.

It's not a good thing when ignorant homeowner groups take matters into their own hands and disturb the balance of nature. Perhaps they should just remove the complaining neighbors who can't co-exist with nature. That would solve all the problems.

The peacocks are not native to the area.

AND yet they were here before any of the current home owners in the Grove!
If you don't like them, LEAVE!
Or deal with it.
Keep a dog in your yard or use another method of deterrent..

This has got to stop! They belong here in the Grove...What measures must we take to stop this from happening? Dogs are not an excuse...Stop letting your dogs run free throughout the Grove and leash them. To all the residents that dont like the peacocks...MOVE!

Actually when my parents moved to the grove in the 70s there weren't any peacocks here.

I agree with Taylor! The peacocks are something we should all cherish! It makes us unique. Leave the birds alone. And she's right, if you don't like it LEAVE!!

Modern life? The peacocks are colorful beautiful life forms that are about to be lionized by Grove Merchants to create an ambiance for the Grove----plastic fiberglass fakes as the real ones are shipped out as unwanted. But, fact is, if these wonderful birds decide to take up residence on your or your neighbors property you can forget about a good nights sleep, flowers or fresh leaves, your garden and a lot of your grass. Think folks, think out loud in the Grape, think what could we possibly do to get these birds back? And not some stupid asinine remark----what is a possible solution?

The peacocks hardly mess anything up either. It's really bizarre to take such a stand against such an innocuous bird.

The worst I've seen a peacock do is make people in cars slow down when they're tearing down our residential roads anyway.

yea how the hell is it ok for them to do this? this new found lets move to the grove and make it the way we want it, instead of the lets move to the grove because it's beautiful and far more natural than other neighborhoods, well it's gotta be freaking stopped, our way of life is being destroyed by brain dead yuppies that wish to sterilize the grove of everything that makes it wonderful

I wouldn't assume that homeowners are ignorant just because they don't want peacocks all over their property.

Peacocks, even when they were all over Micanopy, were known to approach their own reflection. Some males would attack their reflections because they would both flare their feathers at the same time.

It's interesting how easy it is for people who don't have to deal with the peacocks on a day-to-day basis to make comments on what should and shouldn't be done.

How about you each adopt a peacock and let it live on your property? Maybe that would solve all the problems?

What is the harm in allowing the peacocks to live in Coconut Grove? It adds charm and we should all learn to live with a little "inconvenience" from other species. No matter where you live, it will not just be humans you share your neighborhood with. If you can 'tolerate' having a pet dog or cat (etc.), why can't a peacock live in the neighborhood? Is it because you can't train them the way you can train a domesticated animal?

I deal with the peacocks on a day-to-day basis and they don't bother me one bit! I have them on my street(Poinciana Ave) and even on my deck. I like the birds and I think they shouldn't be removed! I'm with grape on removing the complaining neighbors instead. I have a few I'd like get rid of!

Peacocks are originally from India, so what? They started populating what used to be a unique, Grooovy Grove in the late 70's. That's 40 years ago. Way before most of us got it. Preppy Papa Sarnoff was in New York until recently. The neighbors were co-existing with peacocks just fine, for decades, until recently. Wonder why.

BTW, Birds reall are evolved Dinosaurs, according to most recent scientific studies and extensive fossil data. I guess that's why they suddenly don't get along with a few of our highly influential "modern" residents with City Hall power. Maybe we should change the old-fashioned name of Peacock Park to "Sarnoff Park", after all these years.

Actually, Peacock Park is named after the Peacocks, early settlers in the Grove. If there were actual peacocks around when they were here, and the Peacock family didn't like peacocks, which one would have had to move out of the Grove? ("We were here first." No, we were here first."): And if the Peacocks had to move and the peacocks took over, would they have peacock calming circles? I guess its time for happy hour! Happy Weekend Everyone!

I'm sick of the anti Sarnoff rhetoric. Grape, you might want to start limiting the attack remarks because it's polarizing and certainly does not do anything towards getting tourists to visit.

I personally feel that the day Sarnoff leaves office is the day the Grove will be fun again and the toursits will return again. Until then, we are on lock down. No fun allowed.

NBC would be sympathetic? Don't think so. Remember Commissioner Sarnoff's grandfather was the owner of NBC through RCA. Somehow like his grandson I don't think he would let NBC be very sympathetic.

Look, we already have Sarnoff Circle. We have Sarnoff Dog Park. I think they are about to change the name of Shipping Avenue to Sarnoff Way. (Oh, wait, that's already the name of the City Council.)

Once we commercialize the Glass House, Peacock Park should be renamed "Sarnoff Mall."

And what gives people the right to have these peacocks removed? I thought the birds were protected, but I could be wrong.

Sarnoff isn't Castro for Pete's Sake - he's one person on a commission so turn your anger to the entire commission. You sound like right-wing extremist exiles.

How many here actually have to deal with the peacocks on a daily basis? Not just slowing down on Tigertail to see how pretty they are while you drop your kids off at Ransom? How many actually have to deal with the fowl? Living and pooing on your front yards? On your roofs? How many of you have to repair the paint on your car because of them?

Peacocks are polygamous and males assemble harems. How many peacock protectors have to endure the males high-pitched cry during mating season?

Would you be this sympathetic if they looked like Turkey Vultures or Roosters?

Walk a mile in your neighbors shoes before you start casting aspersions. This nastiness is divisive and does the Grove a disservice- if I wanted this I'd move to Coral Gables.

Anon: 12:34 There you go again! Sarnoff bashing! Where do you get off. The man was able to get rid of the Peacocks. Please please give him credit. Miami-Dade said it was illegal to remove, Julie O. Bru said it was illegal, but because Commission Sarnoff is a lawyer, and a darn good one from my understanding, was able to bypass the laws on a technicality. That is the beauty of having a lawyer on the commission. So please stop with the Sarnoff bashing...he is the best thing that has happened to Grove in a very long time. I think you will be very pleased to see his plan for 'Glass House', the resturant that he will propose will put New York City's 'Tavern on the Green' to shame. So please again cut the man a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We celebrate the heritage of some of the original settlers of Miami, the Tequesta Indians with a statue located on the Biscayne Boulevard Bridge over the Miami River. Now we are about to celebrate Coconut Grove Peacocks with fiberglass replicas. Too bad they have to be gone and we have to start missing them before we begin to honor them.

People of the Old Grove:

not sure where you live but I have peacocks on my roof, in my front yard (they dont venture to the back because of the dogs), down my street.. they are very scared of my dogs so when I let the dogs out of the house they flee (they have never attacked my 4 dogs)... I live by tiger tail & 17th & LOVE THE PEACOCKS!! I wish Julie and the City had not allowed Sarnoff to get away with getting rid of the beautiful birds. Maybe they will tweak the law so there isnt a technicality..

KEEP THE PEACOCKS IN THE GROVE!

Anon 8:10 am. Anyone who wants the glass house to be a restaurant should move out of the grove. Public land, public Building let ALL voters decide what to put there. we desperately need a Community Center and then maybe we can start acting like a Community AGAIN. A restaurant serves limited population. A Community Center would serve THE COMMUNITY, don't you idiots get it yet. They are stealing our land and our rights away from us. Anon 8:10 am you must work for Sarnoff and you have brown spot on your nose!

When I said "Peacock Calming Circles", I never intended a slight against Sarnoff. It was an attempt at humor. Anyone remember humor? Maybe I should have said "Angry humorless people that live in the Grove Calming Devices". To the people that got the joke, your traffic patterns will remain the same.

As Taylor says, the VAST MAJORITY of Grove residents like the TRADITIONAL, characteristic Grove Peacocks. We all know they can be a bit obnoxious and loud, but we still love to see them around. They have been in the Grove for about 40 (forty) years. No problems before, peace and harmony with the beautiful birds for 4 Decades, then came Preppy Papa Sarnoff. An infamous Doctor, a couple of Influential residents, part of the Ridiculous MINORITY who can't coexist with out traditional birds, took it upon themselves to erradicate our Peacocks, arbitrarily, unilateraly, without regard to anyone but themselves, without a general consensus at the Village Council, for instance. Bottom line: The Vast Majority of Grove Residents and our visitors from all over Miami, USA and the World got Screwed, again, as usual, by a minority of stiffs with City Hall powers. CI.

What really happened is the Peacocks are out and about at 4 am in the morning and that is against the late night village ordinence...you are not allowed to congragate anywhere in the grove late at night, and Comissioner had them removed of course...those peacocks have way too much fun. I hear the peacocks are ok though, they just moved them a few blocks north to Flannigans.....

Among the many threats to Florida's environment, the perpetuation of exotic species has been among the most pernicious. Exotic species do harm to the "balance of nature," because they have no native enemies to keep their growth in check.

Of course, I'm all for allowing the peacocks to run wild, on one condition: that we have an official peacock hunting season. I hear that they taste just like pheasant. Yum.

Anyways, just like people spray against bugs (not all of which are native), you can spray against peacocks... Cheyenne pepper & water, apply after it rains.. peacocks hate the stuff.

Back to the problem of Peacocks and Battersea! The people who are opposed to them are new comers to the Grove tore down the quaint cottages even though they were far larger than the ones formerly in the Center Grove. The problem, their is poop on their cars why don't they put their cars in the garage.
