Are the peacocks coming or going?
While the Sandy Acre Avocado & Mango farm is being accused of stealing the peacocks, it appears that a few local officials are the culprits. I have emails in to those involved and I am awaiting their response. It's amazing how no one was informed, yet a tv network (the Discovery Channel) and a trapper, named Jeff, were all on in the activity, which went on for months.
NBC Miami jokes about me knowing about every sneeze that happens in the Grove in an article here, yet I and others had no clue about the peacocks being shipped to the Redland, including NBC Miami who is sponsoring the Peacock Tour. According to their online poll, people are furious about this sneaky hijacking of peacocks.
The Peacock Tour involves large painted peacocks (picture the roosters in Little Havana and the cows in New York City) and other art, music and culture. The painted peacocks will go on a parade around town and will then go up for auction. And hopefully brighten up Grove streets for years to come.
And hopefully this nonsense of the disappearing real peacocks will stop. The Peacocks belong in the Grove, not the Redland and any neighbor that doesn't like living on the street with Peacocks, that were there first, can easily move, I know a few good realtors who can find you a nice quiet street in the Grove. Maybe they'll come after the dogs and cats next, are they annoying you too? Let's ship all the birds that chirp and dogs that bark to the Redland. And that cat that wanders around the neighborhood should go too, right? Wrong.
Anyway, on Saturday, September 12, there is a Peacock Meeting (for the Peacock Tour), not to protest the malcontents who have removed the peacocks. Anyone who may want to participate in the spring event is encouraged to attend. It's at the Arts and Minds Center (3138 Commodore Plaza) at 10 am. For info: 305-775-0113.
I caught the above photo yesterday morning, near Micanopy, so it looks like a few are still wandering around the area. People are on the watch now and we are prepared to catch the culprits red handed next time they try to seal the remaining birds.

Grape...Thank you so much for highlighting this issue for us! I have heard that Commissioner Sarnoff was responsible. Can you verify? Thanks and keep up the good work. We appreciated it!
So when is the big reveal? This is post #2 about you having facts and names and all the information about this plan.
I hope it is all put out in the open.
Just giving the guity parties time to respond to my emails, if they don't I will out them. I want to give them a chance to tell their side. I emailed them over the weekend.
Please keep sleuthing about missing peacocks. The article in yesterday's Herald mentioned specifically peacocks removed from North Grove (which had complained about them) but there's been a suspicicious lack of peacock sightings lately in South Grove, too.
Two days ago seven of them were on Tigertail. I pity the families that have them crapping all over their lawns and for anyone that has to listen to them howl like drunk women.
Tell me anonymous at 10:04, are you a women hater? Why do use 'women' to characterize women and drunkeness?
Because drunk men sound nothing like "kakraaawww"
I think we need to contact Commander Martin and put his PST people to the job. Catch the PeaCOCK killas!
Grape, you may not have been monitoring the Village Council meetings yet, but about a year ago this was a big issue. There were a lot of complaints, primarily by residents of Micanopy, some of whom had 40 birds in their yards at a time, poop everywhere, etc. Marc Sarnoff's office looked into the legalities and, as I recall, determined the peacocks are not protected and could be removed, but also decided that nothing would be done by the City of Miami. He told the residents if they wanted to pay they had the right to remove the peacocks from their own properties. A couple from the Redlands, I believe the same people mentioned in the article, came forward and offered to take the birds that were removed. That was the last we heard.
What was discussed at the time was thinning the herd, not getting rid of all of the peacocks. Hopefully that is what's being done. It was never a secret. It was actually on national news and discussed on this blog at the time.
Please stop the trapping of the peacocks. Their beauty and independence inspire us. Their eerie calls remind us of the elemental life force of the Grove.
Then why are all the guilty parties avoiding me and NBC6? Even the Discovery Channel is keeping quiet. Strange don't you think? I have contacted them all.
Lets get rid of the dog owners who do not take their dogs for a walk. I swear next time I step out of my house and step in the doo doo and into my car to the office. I will track you down.
You know who YOU are!
Michelle:
You state that it is legal to remove the birds, but Julio O. Bru says it is illegal.
Did the Commissioner break the law or enforce the law? Why is it that NO ONE will fess up to The Grape?
Wow this blog post is rather obnoxious sounding. Malcontents? You've admitted you don't have all the facts, but you have no problem making disparaging comments about people you don't know. Rather harsh of you to cry fowl, or peafowl in this case.
Not only have I been witness to more than 20 peafowl swarming a home on Micanopy, ABC nightly news covered this story and had even interviewed Commissioner Sarnoff.
Private citizens can have the fowl removed from their property so this might not be the big conspiracy/gossip column story the Grape seems determined to make it.
And I agree, the peafowl do sound like drunk women. Old women. Their mewl is too high pitched to sound male.
I think they are beautiful. And yet a nuisance. A few here and there is nice to see, but when 20 peacocks swarm a house on Micanopy it looks Hitchockian.
If they weren't pretty, if they looked like Mr. Clucky, I am sure no one would be this defensive.
Please stop pointing fingers and calling names. If I wanted to be surrounded by that kind of mentality, I'd join a political party.
We have some 'men' in the Grove that have high-pitched mewls. One could be the official who illegally removed these birds from PUBLIC property.
If you watch the DISCOVERY film you will see that these birds were taken from PUBLIC propery and not private property. Someone is being deceived!
Get your facts straight - its not illegal to trap these birds as long as you are a licensed 'trapper'. They do the same with stray cats. If you had 100 cats in your yard, wouldn't you call animal control? You guys must not live on big properties where these peacocks just congregate by the hundreds. I'm sick of these things keeping me up all night and pooping everywhere! I think they should be killed - each one of them. By the way - peacocks are not native to Miami. They are said to have been brought over in the 80s as pets and then let loose to reproduce. Its the same as rats and snails. We were here first so they need to go.
Anonymous at 12:30 get YOUR facts straight. The peacocks in the GROVE are PROTECTED. Period. What do you not understand about that. They can NOT be trapped whether the trapper is licensed or not.
Now clean out your ears and listen..the PEACOCKS OF THE GROVE are PROTECTED!
I understand some folks are killing the birds..you wouldn't be one of those...would you?
There are plenty of happy Peacocks located in Crandon Park at the former zoo. Perhaps our Grove Peacocks, residence and visitors would be happy if we relocated our Peacocks to Peacock Park and Kennedy Park. Strolling through our neighborhood they could even help slow down traffic on Bay Shore Drive and eliminate the need for a speed trap near Grove Towers.
These evil birds a were thought to be the devils spawn in medeivil times. You realy have to experience a 50lb bird landing, clawing at your roof, and deficating on you car to appreciate the plight of the North Grove home owners. Make the chinese dish of roasted peacock tonges as a daily special at one of the local restaurants. Any one who wants one can have them. Just keep them penned on your propery.
Do peacocks really weigh 50 pounds?
