A wake-up call from Paris

From today's New York Post, sounds familiar, doesn't it?

The crackdown on New York City nightlife sparked by would-be suburbanites who want peace and quiet once the sun goes down could have a devastating effect on the city's economy. In Paris, where the bourgeoisie were invented, 10,000 people have signed a petition to be submitted soon to the Culture Ministry warning that the French capital's once- fabled music and nightlife industry is in a state of decline and it's urgent that something be done about it. Our man in Paris loosely translated the manifesto as saying that music places have been hit hard during the past decade because of a trend toward "tranquility" by the locals. A rise in street muggings and a ban on smoking are also keeping people home. Said our correspondent, "The City of Light is being transformed into the Capital of Sleep."

How can you move to New York City, Paris or Coconut Grove and want peace and tranquility? If you want suburbia move to suburbia! But don't move to the middle of everything, and want peace! Pleaseeee!!!!

I think the comment above this a far push. How could you compare Paris & Manhattan with Coconut Grove. We are as grape would say a Village within a City. Coconut Grove could be better compared to maybe Queens, or Brooklyn to Manhattan. Hate to say it, but Yes we are the burbs.

When people have to get rest to work hard to earn their money they do not want loud drunks keeping them up after 1:00 am or 3:00 am.

There are dozens of buildings in NYC worth more than all the property in Coconut Grove. The Grove is a small suburb.

I grew up in the suburbs and this is not it.

Agree with the 2 previous posts; this analogy is a bit of a reach.
We are often compared to the Village in NYC, and in Paris the closes we could come to is the Latin Village.
Nice try....but it still does not wash.
No need to close at 5, make a better product.

The Village in NY City was started as a cultural hub same us Coconut Grove the cultural hub of Miami. Now we have lost out to Lincoln Rd. and The Wynnwood District. Very little is left of the Grove that was. In fact so much was lost that the Miami Library System has little to no records of our Hay Day. So if anyone reading this has photos they want to share and contribute names of artists, stories abut them Everyone who once thrived in the Grove with images we want to help the Library repository. This said you have to remember it was the CGArt Festival who took the stand to become international and eliminate all the local artists who made their living here, forcing them to abandon the once luctrative area.. So possible CGAF could revisit that this year and make a section available for 33133 artists who put Coconut Grove on the map to start with.

ARe you people F'ing retarded? Suburb means outside of the city - by definition. There's no way around that. And guess what you illiterate fools - coconut grove is in the middle -SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE - of the city of miami. Maybe having city hall here would have clued you in,but I guess not.

South Miami, Kendall, west of the US - that's where are you people that want the burbs need to move. Get to it!!! I'm sick of you.

And please - learn to read and comprehend the language.

Thanks That Guy, I couldn't have said it better myself.
Speaking of nice try, did anyone log on to Javier's blog and read his rant. He states that he lost the opportunity to "run the Grove" by just a few votes. Javier I don't want to burst your bubble but If a jackass like you ever got elected to run things around here it would surely be a disaster for the Grove.
Wait a minute... It's already happened.

I just returned from Paris and didn't notice a significant decline in nightlife.

As for anyone who thinks they can "run the Grove" from a seat on the Coconut Grove Village Council, they should take a closer look at the mandate and the powers of the council and they will find the word powers is not exactly applicable.

That was pretty constructive sailfast... it was almost as if you had a point. Oh, no, wait, it wasn't and you don't.

Regardless, I think Kendall is calling your name. Enjoy.

Sorry That Guy, We so enjoy our wonderful lifestyle here in Beautiful Coconut Grove. To many foreclosures in Kendall, and Mary Brickel Village is a total ghost town by 3 am. Not for us. I just don't feel like going into this battle again with you. One day maybe you will join the rest of us here in Paradise.

Mary Brickell is a ghost town by 3am???

Sailfast, I've been reading this blog for the last 6 months and you seem to be an educated, well informed local so please don't make statements that you obviously know are false.Brickell is kicking the groves butt. I happened to be there this past Sarurday night and stopped by the new Irish Pub, Siegafreddo and Martini Bar. Although I left there around 2:30 there were lots of people still coming and going from bar to bar. As I drove by the grove on my way home It was clear to me where the real ghost town was.
You seem like nice enough person, please keep it on the up and up.

Elli We travel into Mary Brickell alot, we do the day time New Public Market. Late Dinner at PF Changs. Then onto some late night fun. We have even asked the manager of PF Changs, thinking maybe we are missing something? He also said during the week, "this place is really quiet at night". But I alway believe 3 strikes your out. So we will visit again, maybe on a Friday or Saturday. Hopefully I am wrong. I guess my wife & I just love the Grove, & find it hard to hear anyone putting us all down. Sorry.
