Tomás Regalado for Miami Mayor

It's time to choose a mayoral candidate. I had been putting this endorsement off for awhile, because I honestly like both mayor candidates, Tomás Regalado and Joe Sanchez. I know them both and they are both very good people. They are honest, caring and they truly want to help the City. They are in the race to do good things.

But when it all comes down to what I feel is best for the Grove (as well as the city), I have to choose Tomás Regalado. I truly like Joe Sanchez, I was just with him on Saturday night for the Chamber Casino night. He is a decent, honest guy and fun to be around. But I feel the city needs Regalado at this point in time. Regaldo has always been for the neighborhoods, before it was the thing to do.

One main reason I favor Regalado is that we need a breather. The city has moved too fast, we have overbuilt, paid out too much, screwed up our budget and just gone downhill because of the Manny Diaz regime. Regalado to me, is the anti-Manny Diaz. I know people say that Joe Sanchez means progress. But how about we catch our breath from all the progress that has put Miami in a deep hole from all these years of non-stop progress?

Regalado is said to be the "just say no," guy and he has been. But apparently, so am I, because throughout all these years, whenever Regalado made a decision on the City Commission, I agreed with him 100%. I like to think I am a positive person, and just because people say, "no," does not make them a negative person. I think it takes will to say "no," when everyone else is saying "yes."

Regalado voted "no" on things that were close to me -- the Home Depot issue, the 300 Bay Residences at Mercy Hospital, the Marlins stadium (and the over-budget-already Marlins parking garage).

Joe Sanchez is too much in the shadow of Mayor Manny Diaz right now. I feel he is too pro-development. I feel that Mayor Diaz ruined the city with his kowtowing to large developers who have no allegiance to Miami other than to rape it and make money and move on to other cities to do the same. Maybe Miami 21 will help, maybe not, but it's too late for the damage that has already been done.

Why do we need to try to be New York or Chicago? How about let us be satisfied as being Cambridge, Mass or Hartford, CT. Why do we need to be overbuilt and congested? Why do we need to support billionaire sports team owners and millionaire players? Why do we need to agree to allow big box stores in neighborhoods that are out of place for them? Regalado was against all of these issues.

Regarding the Home Depot -- Regalado was against that from day one. He used the messed up Home Depot store in his own district as an example of what we don't want in the Grove. And he could have easily said, "well, we have ours, you are stuck with yours," but he actually was against saddling us with the mess that is now in SW 8th Street.

Is this dwelling in the past? Maybe, but when I think of Regalado, that is what always comes to mind. Neighborhoods first. Everybody's neighborhood, not just his own.

Joe Sanchez always tells me that the new Marlins stadium brings jobs. But to whom? The workers from outside the City who are the bulk of the construction crews? And when the stadium opens, those who will benefit will be the same workers who will just move the jobs from Landshark Stadium down to Marlins Stadium. Same jobs, different location. No new jobs.

Again, the main reason I like Regalado is because he is the anti-Mayor Manny Diaz.

We recommend Tomás Regalado for Mayor of Miami. He stands on his own two feet and has always been a friend to Coconut Grove.

Well I must say I agree with your choice. Thomas Regalado comes across as a gentleman. No rash decisions. Thanks for explaining your side it makes good sense.

There comes a time when a different person is needed for the job.

It is a balance and right now the City needs Regalado. Maybe the City will need Joe later. But not now.

Hi, Grape. Thanks for your endorsement. I'd have been surprised had it been otherwise. Although I agree that Sanchez is a good man. Just wrong a lot of the time in my book, at least.

Manny has done a lot that has not been helpful. The mayor has his motives and I have questioned whether they are good for Coconut Grove or for the City in general. I was happy that he did not get a substantial position in the Obama administration. That may say something. I will be happy to see him return to his business and legal (lobbying?) activities. Let us hope that he is not entirely successful.

I hope Tom does well. I have to think there are better people in Miami, however. One University of Miami president comes to mind, and I'm certain there are many others.

But thanks for giving your views. I'd also like them for Village Council, although I've said before that I am not, under any circumstance, going to vote for an incumbent this year or next. I know some are good, but to the extent they have been in office, they have not exercised leadership by convincing others, which is to be desired in an elected official.

Former City of Miami Mayor, former MDC Commissioner and recently announced candidate for Florida State Senator, Maurice Ferre was interviewed on Spanish language GEN-TV Channel 8 “Entre Nos”, last week. When asked about Miami's Mayoral election, he said that he greatly admires both Tomas Regalado and Joe Sanchez. He said that Miami is in a most challenging period of time in our community’s history. That perhaps Miami deserves a rest and that a peaceful, calm, reserved, soft spoken man like Regalado would probably be the best prescription for our ills. He repeated a famous quote that his father often said to him. “El rason no grita, convensa!” (Reason doesn’t shout, it convinces!) I could not agree more.

Glad to see U came out for the right man. Sanchez just recently started to be for Neighborhoods. Regalado has always respected the Grove and its residents and TRULY LISTENS TO THE PEOPLE. He remembers why he has that seat and it is because of the people who voted for him. He wasn't under anyone's spell.

The City of Miami needs a new leader. Manny Diaz and his handpicked City Manager Pete Hernandez and his handpicked CFO Larry Spring were not good stewards of the public's money. The City has never been in worse shape financially. Overpaid City employees and a projected $100 mil pension contribution next year spell bankruptcy.

Manny Diaz and his team pushed the money losing fire fee, the vast overdevelopment of condos, the $5 mil Miami 21 scheme, the failed Global Agreement, the failed Mercy Hospital re-zoning, the condoization of the Miami River, the bailout of Jungle Island, the $3 bil bailout of the Marlins and many other horrible decisions.

Time for a more conservative approach and time for a new team.

I agree with your decision, Downtown now kinda looks like New York City with all those condos, I also do not think it was a good time to build the ballpark nor a good time to build a tunnel to no where, we need to stop and re visualize what Miami has become and set up a plan to go into survival mode now, since i believe the worst is yet to come

I actually believe Joe Sanchez to be more for the neighborhoods than Tomas Regalado.

Sure, Manny Diaz has/had ambitious plans for the City of Miami - and while overdevelopment has been an issue during his legacy, it has contributed greatly to making Miami a better place in some neighborhoods, in particular Brickell and Downtown. Miami 21 would only help regulate the further development the city needs in order to rid of the neglected blight whose value is only in the land (a lot of the decrepit buildings are not worth renovating, just take a drive around Overtown and you can see a lot of the old buildings that just would be better bulldozed and remade). Unfortunately a lot of Miami still has the same infrastructure that makes it look very 3rd world.

That being said, with Miami 21 and the Master Bicycle Plan passed during Diaz' legacy, it can only be truly effective through continuity and I'm afraid Regalado would have the City take a step back from these initiatives that make neighborhoods livable again, and other community events that have helped Miami seem to be more progressive, such as Bike Miami Days which was widely popular in the Grove.

Additionally, I don't see what the Grove have to complain about - much of the "overdevelopment" the Grovites seem to be complaining about seem to have bypassed the Grove. There's still not many people living near Grove shops and restaurants other than those living in houses. I still see some spots around the Grove near the shops that would be more suitable for multifamily housing, and that would help make the Grove become a more livable place to be which would increase it chance of it becoming a draw again for the rest of Miami and tourists alike.

I'll be going for Joe Sanchez - and for a better Grove.

The problem was not Miami 21 or the bicycle plan. Which Regalado voted yes on the bicycle plan.
It is when the Commissioners voted on overdevelopment

Regalado votes no on everything. So, if you want nothing to happen, he's the right choice. However, I'm not sure that sitting on our hands is ever a good answer.

Scariest of all, no matter who wins, being mayor of miami, while not giving absolute power, seems to corrupt absolutely.

Tread lightly candidates.

To Anon at 2:02 - sounds like Michelle Niemeyer didn't feel like signing her name to that post. Whatever happened to the 100 word limit?

There are 40,000 empty condos in Brickell. How that is a good thing I dont know. "OH BUT PEOPLE WILL BUY AT A LOWER RATE!"

Yes but all of those condo builders/investors are now BROKE.

It was a BOOM and BUST economy! It is time for a different look at everything.

I will support any commissioner who votes no to stupid misguided Administrative directives. I admire any commissioner who does his/her homework.

To Anon at 10:03, out of respect for my friend Tom's (wrong, but still his) opinion, I stayed out of this one. Sorry to disappoint. Joe has lots of supporters other than me. I have committed to never post anonymously here, and I don't.

I guess only time will tell who has more supporters.
The question is Michelle (and everyone else) will you stand with the next Mayor to make the City better or will you critize at every opportunity?

Please, why are we assumming that Michelle will have a position next year.

I voted early. I could vote for only 9 Village Council Members. None of them were Michelle.

Anon 2:1 stop trying to bash Michelle behind your anon status. She's honest and intelligent and her statements have merritt to them. I like her agree that Sanchez is the better choice. Grape your wrong..Sanchez has been neighborhoods first for the last ten years. Tomas just stole the slogan. This is not New Hampshire. We're a vibrant city and a gateway to South & Central America. You cannot stop progress and eventually will hit the Grove. As far as his "NO" votes on everything..he should try offering a solution at times instead of pointing fingers. Do something! Unfortunetly he doesn't have an idea anywhere.

Which candidate has the strong endorsement of Miami Neighborhoods United?

Which candidate is endorsed by neighborhood associations within Joe Sanchez's district.

I believe the answer is Tomas Regalado.
