Mangoheads are a parody of themselves

The Mangoheads met on Monday night in Coral Gables. A proposed rough draft of a proposed license agreement was made between Glenn Terry and the Strut corporation (Coconut Players, Inc.), allowing them to use the King Mango Strut name and logo for the next 33 years.

A resolution was made, which would allow the Strut to move if the City does not give them a permit this year, the resolution goes like this: "If Coconut Players, Inc. is unable to get the City of Miami's permission to put on a 2009 parade on the streets of Coconut Grove we will consider producing our parade at another site or in another city."

The Mangoheads agreed that if they do have a parade this year, "Balloon Boy" or something prominent in this year's news should be the grand marshall. Michael Jackson?

Someone volunteered their 7-year-old son as Balloon Boy, as long as he is is not forced to go aloft. They told him that popping out of a box repeatedly, would do.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, actually, at the BID Special Events and Marketing meeting yesterday, Antoinette Baldwin explained that there are two applications in for the same event, they are under the names King Mango Strut, Inc. (the original) and Coconut Players, Inc. (the new group). Glenn Terry is apparently director of both.

According to City laws, the preference for each event date goes to the event that has the status quo, in other words, the original event gets first dibs on the date in question. So the original King Mango Strut, Inc. has first rights to the last Sunday of the year, which is December 27.

As of now, the City refuses to make a decision on who gets the date and who gets the application approved, even though the law is clear. The city needs to secure the date and the BID will then give funding for the event. It's all up in the air right now.

It's a parody of itself. Is there a marching unit ready for this?

I think the jackasses in charge of this fiasco, and we all know who they are, should be in the parade sportin dunce caps - just before them in the parade a few volunteers should be handing out heads of cabbage and soft tomatoes... maybe even some tar and feathers.

Just an idea.

Shocking to me that Glenn Terry appears to have no sense that he's become the epitome of what he once mocked.

So Glenn is trying to license to the Coconut Players the trademark that he duped the King Mango Strut into paying for?

It's to bad there is not a voice in the Grove who would state a stance, now and then, to form concensus in some meaningful masculine way instead of pussy-footing around 24/7.

For $33 per year, no other person has promoted Coconut Grove more favorably than Glenn Terry.

According to the Miami Herald, $900 of funds from the King Mango Strut parade were used to register that trademark in Glenn's name.

It's justified. 27 years ago, he and his two friends (now deceased) invented the Strut, which has become a widely enjoyed event for thousands.

What's bizarre is that a person would come along and commandeer from someone who started something 27 years earlier.

For God's sake, let the guy put on his parade!

Agreed!!! Ms. Baldwin may have been involved these past 6 or so years, quite involved it must be said, but this does not give her the right to hold Mr. Terry, the parade and the community hostage due to a difference in opinion. Mr. Terry has been selfless in promoting our community, Peacock Park and the Mango Strut parade over the years. It is time for Ms. Baldwin to check her ego and put the interests of the community and the parade first. If she feel she has been wronged she needs to work it out with Mr. Terry. Otherwise, she should be the one to go to South Miami or another local community and start her own parade. Then she can call the shots.

It's not HIS parade, it belongs to the Grove, His slimy tactics make him the prime candidate for the the first float in the parade.
Time to get rid of this ego maniac and his lame newspaper column, let's start a new parade so we don't have to listen to his crying anymore.

Anon 8:29,

Yes, the parade belongs to the Grove but only because Glenn started it in 1982.

The man is the complete opposite of an egomaniac and I am not aware of any "slimy tactics".

Note to Grapevine commenters: Peace, man.... Don't allow your anger to prevail when discussing your differences of opinion. And by all means, state your name. Nobody's gonna get you.

Tradition trumps all. It's Holloween, am looking out my windows right now and a parade of costumed people are streaming into the Grove, its tradition.
We don't have enough port o lets. No one is owning tonight"s event not even the city of Miami or they would have provided port-o-lets. King Mango Strut happens every Sun. after Christmas and it will.

I spent many months each year helping Gregg Gillingham prepare for HIS annual Halloween Party.
In the 1970's, I marched in many Parades, The Goombay Parade, The Key Biscayne 4th of July Parade, etc. as a member of Glenn Terry’s Lawnmower Marching Band.
I have spent many months helping to prepare for and I have marched in EVERY King Mango Strut since the first one. I cleaned up till the wee morning hours after the parade had finished for many of the first number of years when Antoinette was in diapers.
I was personal friends with the late Bill Dobson, Wayne and many more that have passed and those that still work hard to put this parade on each year.
Every Wicked comment or thought that you have read against mild mannered Glenn Terry is coming out of the Self Serving mouth or pen of Antoinette Baldwin.
The Clean Up Clown and other things, Bob Deresz

The Strut has obviously morphed into the Orange Bowl Parade it once mocked and should be abolished.

Terry trademarked the name and made it his personal property asset and because of that the Strut cannot apply for tax exempt status and cannot qualify for grants and individual donations cannot be tax deductible so he depends on you to come up with the funds. In order to get tax exempt status w/IRS no individual can own or control the corporate assets. He used corporate money to make this his personal property. This is a legal issue. If it were your business or corporation you would be pretty upset but because it interferes with your having fun, it is a different story. He created this mess. Do I dare repeat, this is a legal issue!

9:52 - right on. There is no question that it is illegal for any person, regardless of his or her role as a director or principal of a corporation (unless he is the sole shareholder) to purchase something corporate funds and put it in his personal name.

It is called embezzelment, and it is technically illegal.

Should he go to jail over this? I don't think so. Should he pay the money back out of his own pocket? yes, or face the music.

For the record, I think this has officially killed the strut for many.

Look at the times the two above emails were posted. One written just after the other. Written by Antoinette Baldwin to defame Glenn Terry for her own personal, future, gain.
Her true intent is to make this parade as large as the Key West Fantacy Fest, earning her a large salary each year.
