Changing up the billboard
The BID (Business Improvement District) Special Events and Marketing committee came up with a new billboard idea.
The billboard (at US1 and 27 Avenue) for November and December may be "weather reports," which are much better than the post-it notes that are there now.
They will have sayings like "Partly Weird," "Easy Breezy," or "Partly Funny," in muted colors, and on the bottom right, it would say "Coconut Grove" and maybe a tag line like, "A state of mind."
Most were surprised that this long-term approach would be used since it is more of a branding issue and does not address the "911 situation" that seems to be of dire need in the way of bringing business to the Grove.
Liliana Dones (shown here before the board), came up with some other ideas which most in the audience liked and almost got to vote on, but at the last minute one or two people on the BID committee made the decision for the other style.
Liliana's ideas were computer related and used the "escape" key as the focal point. Also, they listed the various events happening in the Grove from the Arts Festival to the Antique Market and even Snow Days, which will be one of the themes on Sundays during December (Virginia Street may be closed and snow may fill the street every Sunday).
This would seem to bring people right in since it lists the events and dates and is basically a calendar of events right there on the billboard (actually that might work, an actual calendar with all the dates filled in with events, specials, etc.)

How about a jumbo-tron like they have at an I-95 billboard with Webcam shots of establishments in the Grove and a nice text pasted below it. It sure can be financed with the $17,000 a month price tag.
Snow day sounds Fun, great idea. Please No Dogs allowed for obvious reasons!
Like the billboard listing events, why not list the Saturday Block parties. Show George with his famous disco wig on and mega phone. Everyone knows George!
Who are the members of this committee?
I sat through the meetings. I went, feeling hopeful that something would be done right then and there. Next thing I know, I heard it takes two weeks. We are no longer 911; instead it's S O S
Lili was treated shabbily. She came to help, offered her services gratis due to the nature of the emergency and was thrown under the bus.
On a personal note, the solution she offered was smart, clean and time sensitive. It also allowed integration in a most brilliant way vis a vis the computer. Something we all have today, a computer. Log onto Coconut Grove site and it would mimic the dash board and you can click right to the participating merchants how sweet is that. Eye- Hand connect. It has wide appeal plus could be implemented NOW for both applications.
It feels like same old, same old fuddy duddies
Advertising by committee is ALWAYS a recipe for disaster. Are there any advertising professionals creating or vetting these billboards?
BID should be shut down. These un-elected friends of politicians line their pockets by giving our money away to their friends.
No one is accountable for their actions, and we can't choose to have or not have any of them. They are forced upon us. How can that be, in a democratic society?
Fire the bid.
Im sorry but this "weather" campaign is awful. Partly weird? Why would you want to associate the Grove with a word that 50% of the population may not care for. "I dont like weird, so I guess I shouldnt go to the Grove." The other 2 slogans are equally as bad.
Liliana's idea sounds like it has some merit and ties in actual events that give people a reason to go to the Grove.
"Easy Breezy" way original who's the brains behind that one. Clairol hair color
Crispen Porter and Bukowski must be rolling on the floor with laughter from the executive 3rd floor.
How many restaurants and stores have to close before this committee gets of their ass.
We need new blood it's the same old tired people who've been there f o r e v e r. With the same bad results.
DOes BID stand for Boring Institute of Destruction?

Agreed, but not all the BID, just the Chairman Mr Sarnoff and his do boy Collins. They haven't a clue what their own village wants.
