No respect for taxpayers or their money

Interesting article in the New York Times about the Marlins stadium, saying how the taxpayers were taken, and the politicians who were for the project, were a bunch of fools (or crooks?)

Remember this at election time. I think it's important. While the NET offices and police officers are being let go, the money is going to the billion dollar owners and players and the taxpayers get nothing in return. Nothing, according to the New York Times.

From the article: “Even as the numbers got worse, the mayors viewed it as an unacceptable political defeat, so they continued,” said Dario Moreno, the director of the Metropolitan Center, a public-policy research group.

Your taxpayer money is covering three-quarters of the projected $645 million to $1 billion cost. In return, the city and county will receive NO new revenue from the park, but the Marlins can keep all the money from the 50 luxury suites, concessions, and advertising, and they keep all the money (up to $100 million) for the naming rights.

It's a bit late for Mayor Manny Diaz who left the city broke and in shambles, and now leaves laughing all the way to the bank, with his pension in tact, but keep it in mind for others who would like to be elected or re-elected.

Once again it is worth recalling which Mayor and City of Miami Commissioners voted to support funding to the Marlins Baseball Stadium during this time of budget crises! That would be Manny Diaz, Joe Sanchez, Angel Gonzalez and Michelle Spence-Jones. The only two Commissioners that defended our citizens against this travesty where Tomas Regalado and Marc Sarnoff. The election for Mayor of Miami is November 3rd. Sanchez who supported this travesty of a Marlins deal and Tomas Regalado who voted against it are both running for the office of Mayor. Who do you feel has been most concerned about the welfare of our community and deserves your vote!

Miami Herald;
Such generous terms were not uncommon during good times, before city and county officials faced yawning budget gaps, potential layoffs and cuts in social services. Yet they forged ahead, anyway, largely dismissing voter opposition and the lessons learned elsewhere that new stadiums sometimes fail to deliver the economic punch promised in forecasts and that the public financing for them can handcuff future generations. The deal was a fresh reminder that even during a recession, sports hold sway over communities regardless of the potential costs. “Outside of Fidel becoming part owner of the team, nothing would have stopped the deal. I’m not anti-baseball, but I’m anti-bad deal. Anyone with any sense can see this is cockeyed.” said MDC Commissioner Carlos A. Gimenez

Its the sham very much expected by those of us who opposed funding the stadium. Amazing. The city and county cut funding to arts and community groups, while teams get subsidized.

We truly live in the twilight zone.

The Marlins completely outplayed the taxpayers. Using aggressive tactics from Manny Diaz and Carlos Alvarez the Marlins got everything they wanted. They got 100% of all revenues and they got 100% of the naming rights and they stuck the taxpayers with 99% of all bills. Joe Sanchez as the City of Miami Chairman aggressivley fought efforts to make the deal more equitable. Sanchez continues to be deluded into thinking the deal was fair. What a putz.

Manny Diaz gets to walk away with a massive pension for himself paid for by future taxpayers. Manny Diaz made eight years of horrible decisons. The City of Miami is effectively bankrupt in 2009 and 2010 looks worse. Yet taxpayers are forced to give Manny $100,000 per year starting at age 55 growing to at least $200,000 per year.
