The lowdown on Muvico; what are their plans?

Mike Whalen and Mike Wilson from Muvico spoke about their plans at last night's Village Council meeting.

On October 1, they will start retrofitting the old AMC. A bowling alley will not be part of the theater, basically because there is not room, they would prefer 14 screens to eight screens, which would have been the case with the bowling alley, they are a movie company after all. Makes sense, I did wonder how it all was going to fit when the bowling alley was part of the original plan.

They will have reserved stadium seating, you could even reserve the seats online. A Sony high def projector is part of the plan, as well as 3-D showings. A 21 and over theater is also part of the concept, which plays in with the bar, lounge area and restaurant. There will be 14 screens.

$4 million is going into the upgrade and they are hoping for a Spring 2010 opening.

They aren't sure if they will be able to show movies as they renovate. Spiteful previous owners have been known to destroy places before new tenants take over, accoriding to Bob Whelan, owner of CocoWalk, and until Muvico gets in, they won't know if AMC left them anything to work with. But they did promise the Village Council that they would try to have at least two theaters up and running, especially during the holiday season.

Have they announced the price points of the tickets to the new movie theater? With the upscale of the facility are the tickets going to be higher than the AMC ticket prices?

On the price points, if we can assume consistency, they have a theater in Boca that is open now. You could check prices at that theater.

Very cool that they will try to have at least a couple of screens open during renovation.

Does this mean that the French film festival will be cancelled?

Call me a cynic, but I doubt very much they will have movies running during renovations. Think of the logistics, noise, staffing, concessions, etc.- from a strictly business standpoint, it does not seem to make sense.
Big companies like to say nice things to the neighbors but when push comes to shove, it's about the bottom line.
What annoys me is they raise people's hopes when they should just be honest and say we can't do it.
Of course I could be wrong, in which case I owe Muvico an apology.

Pierre, the French Film Festival will be at the Tower Theater in Little Havana this year. It starts November 6.

Ed, everything you say about it being more difficult (and more costly) to keep a portion of the theater open during renovations is true I believe--that's why I'm impressed that they're going to make the effort. I suppose you could be right, and they could be lying...we'll see!

I'll take that bet Jobie, but I'm not sure what a nicke is...

That guy, really, are you typical? A nickle is nothing. Take a penny, then a nickle, then a quarter, then a 50Cent piece and then a dollar bill and then a five dollar bill, and then a 10 dollar bill up to whatever-----and you are not sure of the value of a nickle? Your response is trite.

Keeping 2 movie screens open during renovation is a smart move - albeit cumbersome. Once you allow an active audience to change their habits - as in going to another movie theater - it is very difficult to get them to return. It is a good marketing tool, that would retain the identity of Cocowalk as a movie venue alive during renovations. It makes good business sense and we should encourage it. Because in the process, the community benefits too.

Wait a second- does "reserve seating" mean I don't get to pick my seat when I go in? You mean I have to pick my seat at the ticket window? What if these are some kids behind me or a tall guy in front of me? that sucks

What if a tall Fat guy wearing a cowboy hat is sitting in front of me with two screaming kids behind throwing popcorn and snowcaps. Maybe those seats could be half price!
