Do yard/garage sales need permits?

junk1
A few people were upset after they read Glenn Terry's Herald column yesterday. They don't like the fact that there is a permit process involved when having garage or yard sales.

Permits are good, check out this house on 32nd Avenue, just a few feet outside the Grove's city limits. It's a dump. The occupants sell this crap every week. They are in the City of Miami, so I'm not sure how they get away with it. But many of the houses in the area between here and Coral Way do this on a weekly basis.

So in this instance, I am glad that Code Enforcement is picking on the Grove again. We don't need this here. I don't think they need it there. It's a mess and I am surprised their neighbors put up with it. Both photos, above and below are one house, this mess stretches out from one end of the property line to the next.

A couple months ago we had a small garage sale and code enforcement arrived and asked to see our permit. Luckily we had one. I would imagine that the people that sell every week have permits as well. They aren't expensive and easy to get. I bet they are re-selling the stuff we tried to get rid of.

Had no idea you needed a permit for a yard sale. Would never have even thought to get one. Plenty of people do yards sales in the Grove and I wonder how many even know they need one.

As for code enforcement and their arbitrary manner of fining, why don't they ever stop people from putting furniture, electronics and non-organic garbage in the swail? It's only supposed to be for yard trimmings but I saw a pool slide in one of my neighbors. And a futon in another. On top of palm fronds.

I moved to the Grove a year ago and called 311 about what I could put on the road for garbage pick-up. They told me the swail was for "over-sized garbage." That is anything (organic or inorganic) that didn't fit in the green garbage cans.

The swail is for anything oversized.
Inorganic or not

Coconut Grove is our neighborhood and it must not replace the recently closed Flagler Dog-track Flee-market. Let’s not permit the weekly selling of products or personal possessions from the front yard. A Garage Sale need not take place more then once or twice a year. We should also resent the fact that the city is imposing a permit fee to have a Garage Sale. How dare the city profit from the residents that are hard pressed to sell their possessions as a result of the economic mess we are all in! Is it not ironic that the city helped create some of this economic mess with permitting of the oversupply of residential units! It also seems like every month a new orchid stand is open for business seven days a week in front of residence homes. Is there that much demand for Orchids! Is the city that desperate for a new revenue stream. Aren’t they earning more then enough from the excessive restaurant parking fees, parking meter fees, overtime parking tickets and the recently enacted fee to register empty lots!

I agree with Grape. We need permits for the yard sales. The fee is nominal to basically cover the time it takes them to process the paperwork. Before we had the permits it was terrible. Some Grove residents had weekly sales and the buyers just stop their cars and get out with no regard to driveways, lawns, or even getting their cars off of the street. As with most rules, this was created because of the abusers, and to benefit the good people of the Grove that want to enjoy their streets and their weekends.

yes, I know this house well, I pass by it every day. They do this every weekend. One day I asked them if they had a permit, they told me they didn't need it because they knew "someone important" in the city. Guess who they know? look at the sign.

Miami Beach does not allow garage sales. There might be friends piggy backing on Grovites. I do believe there ought to be a limit. Twice a year seems the right amount. Especially if people a need to move the other time spring cleaning or whatever you want to call it. It's the left over signs that are rude. Maybe fine, after the fact
per sign left up.

Always wondered how they get away with it aren't they part of the City of Miami just like the Grove?

Everytime I see a Tag sale or Garage sale sign nailed into a tree, I always rip them down.

Just donate the stuff to the nice ladies at the This and That Shop or the folks at Goodwill. Take your tax write-off and go for a walk in the park or a bike ride. You'll never get back the time you've wasted trying to sell your excess things. Then don't continue to accumulate and you'll be free forever.
