BID agrees to continue funding Block Party
The BID (Business Improvement District) met yesterday to discuss their marketing and events budget. About 10 BID members were at the table (not all are shown here) and there was an audience of about 15 or 20, watching the proceedings.
The Saturday night Commodore Block Party is scheduled to be back for six months starting Saturday, September 12.
Mia Stierheim (far left in the photo), leasing manager of CocoWalk, and BID board member, was a bit concerned, feeling that Commodore is getting all the attention, but honestly, isn't CocoWalk the center of town these days? All the tour buses even send people right there, bypassing everyone else.
The BID board made it clear that everyone will be included in future projects and there will be a "co-op buy-in," like Commodore is doing, where the restaurant owners are footing part of the bill. The expenses are quite high to run the block party -- upwards of $93,000 for six months' of Saturdays. The BID will kick in $35,000.
But traffic did improve all over the Grove on block party Saturdays. You could see the people going from one end to another. Most of the businesses represented at the BID meeting encouraged the block party to continue and so the BID voted to do just that -- they will fund a large part and the restaurant owners (7 on Commodore Plaza), will kick in $350.00 each Saturday to help defray costs.
The new name is the "Coconut Grove Block Party," and all concerned will make an effort to include the whole Grove.

This all sounds well and good, but I'm confused. I'm naturally a numbers guy, and it struck me that you said 7 restaurants are kicking in $350 per week - "to help defray the cost", and also said that 6 months of saturdays cost $35,000 - Here's where my question is - 7 restaurants $350 per week - $2,450 per week - 4 saturdays a month( at least ) $9,800 - 6 months - $58,800.
I'm not saying anything other than math, so please grape do not attack me or claim that I suggested BID was stealing or anything else - I just added numbers. That is all.
Mia Stierheim wanting to promote Cocowalk is fine but why is she trying to work against promoting all of Coconut Grove? Does she want the rest of Coconut Grove to shut down so Cocowalk would be the only destination in the Grove? Yes, she does, she is acting in the same manner as the special interest lobby in Washington: "Flatten the path for the big corporations on the carcass of the citizens". Why is she sitting on the BID board, who approved her? Does she not understand that better business for all of Coconut Grove benefits every business including businesses in Cocowalk?
that guy said,
I did the math and i think you got the numbers wrong. Bid is putting in $35,000, restaurants are putting in $58,000 . Thats like $93,000 for 6 months of block parties.Just like article said. Doesn't sound like anyone is making off with more or less money. All figures add up to me
that guy - the cost is "upwards of $93000 for 6 months". Guess youre a numbers guy but not so great at reading comprehension.
anon - classic example of a Grovite jumping to conclusions and getting on their soapbox without a) reading correctly or b) knowing any facts. Nowhere does it say that Mia Stierheim is against the Commodore Block Party, nor is she trying to work against anything. She is on the BID because Cocowalk is the epicenter of the Grove and a main source of business. Take your conspiracy theories and flush em down the toilet where they belong.
I agree with MIA though. Commodore is receiving prefedential treatment. One thing they should do is call it "Coconut Grove Street party" not block party. and have several things going on at different corners of the grove instead of spending all the money on closing Commodore
anon 1:27 Cocowalk is an epicenter? If we had earthquakes here, then it would have worked magics. Cocowalk is more like a intergalactic black-hole. It sucks oblivious tourists in to its kitsch trap and then they ask: why and how did I end up here, when I can do the same thing ten times over at Dadeland mall or Merrick park? Mia Stierheim should know Cocowalk exists because of the street and the sidewalks of Coconut Grove, not the other way around. By the way why has the street sign on Commodore Plaza and Grand Avenue been removed for months now? Ha, tell me you conspiracy theorists, why has this been mentioned here and all over the place and nothing is done about it.
I agree with "proud to be Anonymous". Cocowalk is a black hole. I've been told a Winn-Dixie used to be at the location. That would have been far preferable to me. It would have been nice to have a low-price supermarket in walking distance and not have to walk or bike across route one to Publics.
Cocowalk is just a mall. I'm surprised residents ever allowed it built in the first place. Why not develop down grand ave into the poorer section of the Grove. The Grove was legally segregated why have no steps been taken to bring two communities together economically and socially.
Winn-Dixie was where the Bookstore is actually, and it was a small, crappy thing.
But I do see Trader Joe's at the old Borders books. But even on Grand Avenue would be a great place for Trader Joe's. Or Sweet Bay.
Mayfair gets a vote on the BID board, why shouldn't CocoWalk too? They both pay a ton of money into the BID!
