They like to sneak things past the public in summer

As long-time Miamians know, the local government likes to scam people in the summer when many residents are on vacation and not paying attention to politics.

So, as usual, they are trying to get something by on the public on Thursday, August 6 when the City Commission has decided to have a "special" meeting to hear the Miami 21 zoning changes. Many are disturbed by this and would like you to remember the politicians involved at election time. Diminishing citizen participation by doing this in the summer is unconscionable.

The meeting is at 2 pm (when the people in town are working), so please try to attend and Miami Neighborhoods United is requesting that you email Commission Chairman Joe Sanchez and ask that the meeting be moved to the fall, when more citizens can attend. His email address is JSanchez@miamigov.com

Isn't the chairman in charge of scheduling meetings?

Excellent points made by Grapevine, thank you.

Miami 21 is the latest, over-budget, over-deadline project that will have zero noticeable effect on anything.

How about that Waterfront Masterplan? Sure loved that one.

In my opinion, 25% of our tax dollars are used for paper, ink, and hiring "consultants".

Bottom line is that most commission meetings result in one thing: time wasted. South Florida government will operate by itself with, or without citizen's input. No difference.

Grape, I waited to get confirmation of what I believed to be the case before making this post. Joe Sanchez did not schedule the special meeting on Miami 21. The Mayor has the right to schedule special meetings of the City Commission, and this meeting was scheduled by Manny Diaz.

Ok, I was just wondering. But the Chairman does have the ability other then the Mayor to schedule meetings correct?

How do you know which one calls which one?

Michelle, I never claimed that Joe Sanchez scheduled the meeting. A person commented here assuming as usual, without having a clue. I received the announcment in my email like everyone else. Since Joe Sanchez is the chairman, it has been circulated that he should be the one to change the meeting.

We sent our emails. Let's see if he actually pays attention. Either that, or change the tag line.

Manny Diaz has made enemies of neighborhoods, families, land use attorneys, property owners and architects. Everyone is united in hating Manny's folly, Miami 21.

Typical of Manny to want to bring up Miami 21 in August mere months before his reign ends. Anyone notice Manny spent the taxpayers money on two pages of full page ads in the Miami Herald? How much did that cost?

If it goes too fast, people complain. If it goes too slow, people complain. The ones who wanted to review the code wanted more time. Time was given, now it's showtime. City services don't stop in the August recess, why should Miami 21 and planning for the future of the city? Come people!!

There would be no need for a Miami 21 or any major change in Miami’s Zoning Code (especial one as complicated as Miami 21) if our Mayor and some Commissioners respected our Zoning Code and did not vote to authorize all of the many illegal spot zoning over the years to accommodate their developer pals. It’s a good thing that the public was able to prevent the efforts of the City to approve the first draft of Miami 21 before we could study it and see all of its many shortcomings. I suggest that we delay reviewing Miami 21 and any other significant proposal like the Virginia Key Master Plan until after the November elections. The present administration has had 8 years to damage our city and we would appreciate them taking the next 5 months off and giving us a break.

Please note why Mayor Diaz has the pedal to the metal on Miami 21. Have you heard of Amendment 4?

What if there is a requirement for the taxpayers to vote for or against Miami 21? Is Mayor Diaz trying to fly under the radar to avoid Amendment 4 requiring developmnent projects to go before the taxpayers? Let's not forget the required amendments to the CRA Plan if Miami 21 falls within the CRA demographics! Has this been accomplished as an addendum for public vote to the CRA Plan? Then, there is the question of the affordable housing plan not being included in Miami 21 which is exclusionary zoning. These non-compliance issues have Miami 21 on the bench. Would someone invite the City Planners for a town hall meeting? Now we know why they call it the "magic city".
