What we need . . .

A good Chinese food place -- take-out and eat-in.

How do we not have one?

Cutler Bay has this small place on Old Cutler Road called Takee Outee. It's only take-out and the place has lines around the block. We need this.

I love Takee Outee. I wouldn't say that they have "eat in" though. Two tables with 6 chairs total doesn't really cut it.

Their efficiency in taking orders over the phone is incredible. I can usually give my phone number (for lookup later), order for my entire family, and get the total in 45 seconds.

I might like place like that in the grove, but I'd go broke eating there all the time too.

For many years there was a fantastic Chinese take out hole-in-wall named Gourmet, Gourmet located in Coral Gables off of the Ponce de Leon Circle. They did a fantastic lunch and dinner business and satisfied many office workers and residence of Coral Gables They even delved to the Grove on weekends. Their old building was being torn down so they had to move. For several weeks I tried to find them a suitable small and reasonably priced location in or near the Grove so we could all have some delicious and inexpensive Chinese food. They considered the empty Papa Johns Pizza space on Grand, the empty pizza space on Bird next to the convenience store. They even considered the old bike story or was that the old Chinese restaurant on Grand across from CVS pharmacy, but the agents never bothered to return the calls. All the Grove locations were way to expensive so they moved to 4249 W. Flagler ST. ( 305-445-8664 & 305-443-7729 www.gourmet-gourmet.net). How sad that the Grove lost this wonderful opportunity to have a first rate and inexpensive Chinese Take Out Restaurant for all of us to enjoy. So if you happen to be near W. Flagler and 42 Ave stop by Gourmet, Gourmet on the north side of the street, park for free behind the building, walk in through the back door and tell the owner Jose (in English, Spanish or Cantonese since he is Dominican/Chinese) that Harry sent you and that we all sure wish he had opened in Coconut Grove. Its well worth the drive. Harry Emilio Gottlieb

There's a place not far away called Confucio Express. It's pricey though. The containers have a space for side dishes and mains - unfortunately they use the main slot for fried rice and the side dish slot for their mains.

It would be nice to have a good Chinese food place here. So many sushi places.

Between the Hotels and Mercy Hospital, anyone who opens up a Chinese take out will do very very well. I remember some chinese take outs, in Portland Or. the name was Hung Far Low, in Manhattan Lots of Wok, & Yeung Ho Chinese Restaurant, & in Brooklyn Me & My Eggroll & Whats of Wok. What about for a Thai Restaurant Lets Thai one on. Anyway be sweet to see one open with a cool Coconut Grove name. Any ideas?

Red Dragon was the most disgusting food Ive ever eaten and their delivery service took more than 2 hours most days. Good riddance.

Not a fast food take out but try Atchana's at the Mutiny for good Thai food - great setting also. Reasonable prices. Code 33.

Pei Wei is an extension of PF CHANGS, for half the price. One opened in Kendall on 88th and 137, it would be perfect.

That Chef Tian place aint bad. I believe the guy used to work at Tropical Chinese. Better (but not Chinese) is Whisk Gourmet right next door.

The problem with the Grove is that a new place will come in and someone will have one lousy experience and then go on a mission to condemn the place amongst the community. So Id be weary if I were a restaurant attempting to open up shop in the Grove. There's a fickle bunch here that is very unforgiving. Look at Sekai. Everyone got pissed off when they gave away FREE FOOD and didnt expect such a crowd and had a hard time accommodating everyone. They were damned to hell because of that and that was completely absurd. Now I hear they may be closing (heard from a friend, didnt go see for myself so could be a false rumor).

I always worry about Chinese restaurats because they are known for not being very clean - it seems they are the ones always getting on the Dirty Dining list. It seems the inspectors need to keep a closer watch on them for some reason.

umm what about the empty space where basil was?
or next to the 24 hour fitness where qdoba was?

i'd like to see something like wagamama.com which is a noodle shop more than anything (super popular in london and boston). But cheap, good chinese like gourmet gourmet (best takeout chinese around btw, worth driving to flagler) would also rock. if it was open late too, drunks from the bars would scarf down some dumplings or lo-mein.

I wish we had a decent Chinese delivery in the Grove too. Absent that - I wish Canton in the Gables would get their head out of their butt and start delivering to the Grove. I've asked them several times and they won't come south of Bird. At least they have a reserved carry-out parking space in front.

I also travel to Canton in the Gables & yes I also always tell them to open up a take out store in the Grove, before someone else will. Or deliver to the Grove. The little ladies just smile and sometimes just laugh. Maybe someone smart in the industry will get the last laugh. I think I just read that in my last fortune cookie.....hmmmmmm.

The take-out only concept can work. In Hampstead, London, there is this small kiosk that sells crepes...always with a long line.

Chinese sounds great, but not Pei Wei, something original.

Inexpensive restaurants (and take out places) need inexpensive rent. It looks like Grove property owners would rather have empty space than lower the rent. So.......

Pei Wei? An Asian-american friend of mine called it "Asian food for people who don't really like Asian food" - i agree.

I went to that one on Kendall / 137TH AVE - gross. The everything is too "goopy" meaning the amount of sauce makes the dishes almost soup like. There is such a thing as "balance"...
