Scamming or honest mistakes?

Last night I was charged about $31.00 at a local convenience store for a few bottles of soda, paper towels and some ice, and some paper plates.

I didn't think about it until this morning, but I went back and they told me that the bill should have been $21.00. Still overpriced, but I was overcharged $10.00 last night.

Last weekend some people I know dined at a Grove restaurant. They were using a gift certificate. The restaurant padded the bill by adding things on that were not ordered, like a whole steak dinner and they also doubled up on the desserts. When asked to see the bill, they gave one of the diners a hard time, assuming that since it was a gift certificate, they didn't need to see the total.

Could these two instances be part of the problem of why people refuse to return to the Grove? I know times are hard, but scamming people is not the way to make up for a poor economy.

Tom to answer your question, those 2 instances are generic and occur everywhere, willfully or in error. Simple rules for savvy consumers and savvy businesses:

1. always check your bill.
2. any business that does not provide its customers with an itemized bill should not expect to last long.

Twelve years ago, I was shorted $10 in a 7/11. I talked to the manager/owner and asked him to check the drawer at the end of the shift. I called the next day to find out if he acknowledged the overage and he refused to speak with me. I have not stepped foot in that store since.

Business must be bad if the owner has to resort to stealing.

Greenstreets is infamous for padding their tips after you sign and give it back. I ALWAYS write out what my final charge is underneath the numerals in Miami. Such as: $11.00 Eleven dollars.

Grape even Disneyworld padded our bill once with a $500 tip. A big scam is ti change the tip. So when writing the tip and total make sure to write the dollar sign and put the number clsoe togteher so they cannot be changed. As well total the amoun and put the dollar sign in front. I like the readers Idea above to write out the amount Ten Dollars and fifty cents like a check.

Also if the server is gon too long with your card look out.

As well there has been some stealing of outgoing mail in the North Grove a sure sign of identity theft. They steal your outgoing bills and then they have your name, account number and copy of your check including your signature, very easy to make fake checks these days. Alwyas take your outgoing mail to a USPS mail box and do not leave it in your home mail box for pick up.
Hope someone finds this useful.

Remember T-shirts in Key West about 7 years ago? $8.00 shirts turned into $800.00 on most credit card purchases and was so bad the mayor and the police had to get involved and was so severe when the tourist returned to their home country many called their local news media. It harmed the tourist trade for several years. Normally, my wife and I do not use our credit card, but we spent 60 days in Brazil and used the card to avoid carrying cash. We checked our bills upon returning home and the Brazilians were very honest.

Johnny Rockets has tried to pull this in the past, some chick tried to short me $20 on the change. You'll find this kind of behavior in any area with lots of tourists.
