Commodore Plaza to be closed for Summer Rendezvous

July 4 will be the first of five Saturdays in a row, where Commodore Plaza will be closed to auto traffic for the night. This is an experiment, and it if works, who knows, it could be a permanent thing.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, bands will be playing and there will be food and drink and it will be a fun street party. It's perfectly timed to occur right after the fireworks in Peacock Park. In fact, there is talk of a conga line or something like that, which will wind its way from the park up to Commodore.

The party will go until 4 am, the music will just go inside at 11 pm.

The long working title for the street party is "Summer Rendezvous -- Fall in Love With the Grove Again." A mouthful.

Yes...lol it IS a mouthful, but what a great way to bring Vitality to this part of the Grove. We are really excited and are looking forward to a fun Summer.

What a great idea! The key question is, how will it be advertised? Who will we tell?

What a wonderful feeling to turn down the street and see all the flags. Thats about the flags on Grand Ave., I've been championing closure of Commodore Plaza for more than several years. An idea who's time has come. Every-time I see the travel channel or Rick Steves the one feature that they always laud is is the pedestrian friendly areas with cafes.

An excellent idea. Melbourne, Australia does the opposite. All car traffic is denied access to some streets until 7 PM and it works really well for them.
