We need a make-over and fast
The Merchants Meeting is this morning at 9:30, ironically, every single person at yesterday's Bed Race meeting will be at the Merchant's Meeting today. But I won't get into that again.
The Merchants Meeting will be a large meeting and most of it will revolve around the Pow Wow coming to town. I have a few suggestions.
First off: Clean up the freakin' Grove! It's a pigsty. Places like South Beach are really rolling out the red carpet and they are cleaning and sweeping the sandy beaches, literally, and they are adding flowers and sprucing up the place.
I walked around the Grove and other than a few sidewalks being fixed up, away from the main action where it is needed, by the way, CocoWalk is putting in new flowers and touching up paint. That's it.
We are all preparing for the night of May 18, but won't people be here for the week? Won't families and friends of the delegates be wandering around before we put on our show, during daylight hours?
Weeds are growing from the sidewalk on Grand Avenue (right photo), paint is all scraped off the light poles (left photo) and sidewalk bricks are missing and wobbly. The area in front of the Guess store is always trashy (center photo). Can't they send someone out with a broom?

Thanks you for bringing this up I will try to also mention it at the Merchants mtg. It is so very important.
The area in front of the Guess store is always trashy (center photo). Can't they send someone out with a broom?Don't "they" have a responsibility to keep the sidewalk clean in front of their business daily? Where are the code enforecement swat teams now?
Doesn't the city have a responsibility to maintain sidewalks that are safe to walk on?
One thing I've learned about Miami is that they will take our tax money and feel no responsibility to provide service for it, even if it's for the betterment of the City.
Sure, there should be community pride. I sweep out in front of my house and maintain nice plants on the public swale. Don't have to, but I like my street to look good. I note many neighbors and local store owners do the same.
If our community can feel motivated to maintain what we can (for free), why doesn't the City(who collects our $$$) feel the same?
I agree, the grove needs to be cleaned up a lot. I can deal with a few bricks being out of place on the sidewalks, but you just don't get that clean feeling from walking around the grove. It feels grimy.
i was in the design district (40th st. north of 195) last night and that area is surprisingly nice. there is no reason the grove cant be that clean.
Legally, it is the responsibility of the store owners to keep the sidewalk area clean in front of there stores
Just as a homeowner is responsible for the sidewalk in front of his/her home, store operators are responsible for the sidewalk in front of their stores. It has always been so. Washing the windows and sweeping the sidewalk, doing any necessary weeding, general cleanup, should be a routine part of management's scheduling.
It's funny, I've seen code enforcement hassle many of the bars and restaurants in the grove (requiring cigarrette butt recepticals, etc) out front and even walking up during business hours, pulling a working employee out and pointing out things for them to clean up. And I dont' mean at some point in the future, I mean Martin's swat team pointing at a cup, saying pick that up, then pointing a butt that missed the can - and that, then at a wrapper of some kind "and that", as if they were a parent or a bullying teacher of some kind. Yet, apparently this enforcement is no where near equal.
I will note, that they won't do this at Moe's or Sandbar which are allowed to and thus do hire off duty cops to sit by the door for a nice moonlighting rate, but no other bars or restaurants are allowed by law to do so, and thus don't get the fringe benefit of being ignored by code enforcement (which those two establishments are for the most part). I've actually followed enforcement around on their sweeps (twice) and watched them walk in and inspect every inch of various establishments, then walk by Moes and Sandbar, where they shake hands with the off duty officer and the bouncer, then go on their merry way without looking at so much as a single certificate.
Clearly retail stores are also exempt. Let's fire all of code enforcement and start over.
Thank you for addressing this!!! Yes, the Grove needs to be cleaned up. It's amazing how a fresh coat of paint and flowers make the place seem more safe and welcoming. Beyond that, the trash and gunk on the sidewalks needs to be cleaned up! Ground planters should have plants, not dirt, rocks, garbage and weeds. Who is responsible for this? Don't the store owners care that the areas in front of their stores look like alleys? It really isn't that complicated; it just takes a little effort for a big payoff (ie. customers).
Yes, the Grove needs to take more pride in it's appearance. The weeds, debris and dirt in the planters, the trash and cigarette butts on the ground make it look as though people who live and shop here don't care. We do. Visitors and residents will treat the area with more respect if it looks respectable.
Attention Groveites if you own a dog pick up your dog's poop, and then throw it in your own garbage receptacle! Especially at POOP park (Kennedy Park) and on the sidewalks. Also Ransom and Carrolton are not doing a good job of keeping theri sidewalks clean. Maybe Code Enforcement should hop over there as well. In fact maybe code enforcement can take over Dog Poop enforcement fines, sound like it's right up their alley!
