Treasure Hunt for July 4th is an idea going around
One idea kicking around is a Treasure Hunt -- maybe having people find things like painted coconuts and the one with the most wins something big.
To get people all over the Grove, from the Barnacle to Peacock Park and back, the coconuts would be hidden everywhere in the Center Grove. And people will search all day, going from store to store and place to place.

The Center Grove Neighborhood Association did this at the first Great Grove Picnic, and it was an absolute blast! Got people into all the stores, too.
I think a slightly improved idea would be to have a scavenger hunt of sorts where people would take pictures of all the things on a list and have prized based on who gets done first, gets all the pics on the list, etc. The list could include historic grove sites (clearly not a certain church), some iconic thing in a sponsor's business (the bear at Moe's, the barracuda hangin at 'Cuda's, the shark in Sandbar, etc.), the glass house, the (way too small) wooden walkway on the bay at Kennedy, the remanants of the old wall that separated the grove (bad history is important history too), or even certain grove characters who we know will be out and about the whole day, such as Grape or even snake in a pillowcase guy.
You get the idea. I think that's a little more fun and mixes in promotion, which makes it better than a slightly modified easter egg hunt.
Thoughts? feedback? insane rants about how obnoxious i am? Comment from Grape telling me to come to more meetings? (i make what I can)
BIKE PARADE!!! or maybe even a real Parade like Key Biscayne!
How about an American Flag in all this discussion?? When did the Founding Fathers have a treasure hunt? How about a BBQ with hotdogs and hamburgers? I did like the idea about the parade.
A lot of good ideas and a lot of work. Who is going to step up to the plate so the same people in the Grove aren't always doing all the work. Everybody should see what it takes to get permits from the City, arrange for street closures, get barricades, etc. Who is going to raise money to pay for city services like trash pick up, etc.????
anon 9:30 - some of us work our asses off, generate revenue, get money flowing in our community, pay ridiculous taxes, and keep the economy going, while others with jobs that don't require 60 hours every week, get on planning committees and spend said money. pretty good system. One hand washing the other.
I'd gladly switch roles, but I'm one of the 7 people living in the grove born sans silver spoon. I still have some work to do before I get there.
Well actually all the people on the commmittes work full time jobs, Felice for instance arrives at 5:30 am at the Bookstore each day and can still be seen at Village Council meetings at 10 pm. She also runs the merchants group and is part of the BID, Bedrace committee, July 4th committee, etc. etc.
I work full time but manage to get to all the meetings and so do most on the committees.
I don't think one person on any of the commmittees is retired or does not work 60 hours a week. They are on these committees to try to bring business to their businesses by having Grove events.
Steve from Palm Produce is on every commmittee too and runs a bunch of stores in between.
And that is the case with 99% of the people who do most of the committee work in the Grove.
Well said by everyone. It's true 80% is done by certain members of most committees.
The rest should just stay out of the way. Those that complain should at least be positive.
Everyone always talks about the few people sitting on the Coconut Grove Committees, but no one ever mentions how to get on these committees.
I announced every meeting here in the Grapvine. All you need to do is show up at the place on the date and time. It's that simple.
