Grove library being considered for historic designation

library
Thanks to the instance of historian Arva Moore Parks, historic designation of the Coconut Grove Library (2875 McFarlane Road) and grave site of Mrs. Eva Monroe are being considered.
On Tuesday, June 2, 2009, the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board will consider the issue.

A preliminary designation provides the board with information about the property so they can determine whether or not the property meets the criteria for significance as detailed in Chapter 23 of the City Code.

Many people many not realize that the Coconut Grove Library is 114 years old. It includes the wing built as a replica of the original 1901 structure. And is on the original site adjacent to the Coconut Grove Woman's Club, built in 1921, which actually started in 1891. Both can be seen above, the library on the left and the Woman's Club on the right.

The grave site of Grove pioneer Eva Monroe is right next to the library.

The public is asked to attend the hearing to show their support. It is at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive), right here in Coconut Grove. It's on the agenda for about 3:00 pm.

Although I no longer live in the Grove, I have some great memories of that library. It was like sitting in the trees, to curl up by those windows with a book. Way back then, there was a custom (not encouraged by most libraries or librarians) that certain readers would make notes in books, recommending or not. Savvy library users looked for those notes, and often made their selections accordingly. It's the sort of thing that can only happen in a tight community, which is what the Grove was once upon a time.
