A big smile for Burn Notice

sharon
Burn Notice star Sharon Gless at yesterday's City Commission meeting, is all smiles after the commissioners voted unanimously to keep Burn Notice around for awhile.

Below, State Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, producer, Terry Miller and Sharon Gless, await the commission's decision. While a few sour pusses in the Grove are still complaining that the Expo Center is falling apart and they say they are afraid to walk by, these people work inside daily. I doubt the production company and many others would allow Sharon Gless and all of the people working there to be there if that was the case.

burn-notice-wait

So to those who want to complain on and on about the structure, if you don't like the Expo Center, look the other way when driving by. It's going to be there for awhile and it is going to be bringing in millions of dollars a year. Millions! When you can do the same and bring the city millions of dollars a year and hundreds of jobs, I am sure they will hear your side of the story, actually those who did have another side of the story, wimped out yesterday and refused to speak up.

In the meantime enjoy the acres and acres of parkland surrounding the area at Kennedy, Myers and Peacock Parks (and the Barnacle and the many other pocket parks). You complainers make us sound like we are land locked and in the Bronx or something. Do any of you complainers actually partake of the parks we have now? I highly doubt it.

Grape. Another great article. Let me ask a question prior to the comments coming in .. and they will. Some people, Commissioner Sarnoff being one, says this is costing the taxpayers a lot of money. Have you been able to get those dollar numbers out to the people.

I see some people saying this, but I would certainly think that after taxpayer expense the amount the taxpayer brought in would certainly offset the City's expense probably in the upper millions. Let's do the math or at least see what that number is. I bet it is miniscule compared to what the City brings in. I'm sure we will find the costs to the city laughable.

Again great article

The direct "income" from keeping Burn Notice filming in the Expo Center is minimal: $240,000 per year. The impact to our community is huge. As Bill Talbert said, if we were to buy the advertising on Burn Notice's shows over the time it's been on the air, it would cost $70M. The production itself pays hotels, rental car companies, lumberyards, local workers, etc. I don't know how we could begin to calculate the value of the exposure we get to our tourism industry, etc., over and above those direct expenditures.

So Mrs. Niemeyer what the numbers Commissioner Sarnoff is publishing are, in the final analysis, deceptive. You seem to have a somewhat bitter and nasty Commissioner in your district. That Sanchez guy is a jewel. I think Mr. Falco has done a top notch investigative story here. Thanks for sharing, great presentation yesterday.

Burn Notice is indeed the new Miami vice - financial crack.

There's only one way I can think of that *not* tearing down the building could "cost money." That's if the city has a grant in hand that will be taken back if not spent within a time frame. I refuse to consider a loss due to not having the property available to sell to a developer. That's not a legitimate use of the land.

It is encouraging to see reason prevail. I hope everyone is making notes to review before voting in the next election.

Great job Tom and all! I think the Expo Center should also come up for Historic Preservation. Alot of cool history has taken place here!
Jim Morrison arrested here, and other artists

http://www.doorshistory.com/doors1969.html

In France Jim Morrison's grave is 1of the top tourist attractions!

Let's Preserve something cool from Grove History!

Grovites should we tear this bulding down ever? Ask yourselves?

You guys must have really smoked heavy stuff in the old days... Historic Preservation?? Its a gigantic shed... just cause someone that visited hundreds of other sites and places got arrested there? Because other artist performed there? Thats rediculous, that building is not historical. Orange Bowl had more history and plenty of stars and performers and that didnt help it.

I really dont care if they knock it down today or in 3 years. I see points on both sides. But I would like to note this article felt like someone needs a hug (Grape). "sour pusses"..lol.

DEAR 5 PM ANON
In a way, they have already named the place after Jim Morrison. Would be fun to see a statue there in the future.

I love the drama queens who say that pieces of the building fall off as they walk by. Maybe they should be more concerned with getting the Coconut Grove Playhouse active again so they can have a place to put on their charades.

Maybe we should ask the Miami Parking Authority to help with the Playhouse. They are part owners after all!

Sarnoff's figures may be real - it is just that the income and publicity we receive far outweigh those figures. Yes let's focus and concentrate on getting the Playhouse going and leave the Expo Center alone now that we have some "action" in that building. Burn Notice's new season starts Thurs. June 4 11pm USA Ch. 45 - tune in, tape it, set your TEVO, let's get that show synidcated so it lives forever.

I believe Burn Notice might be on at 10:00 pm on June 4th. New time slot. 6.1 million viewers saw one of last seasons episodes.

Burn Notice is replayed 5 to 7 times a week in Miami and as Bill Talbert stated Burn Notice is now being shown in over 200 countries. Talbert called Burn Notice "an infomercial for Miami". He also said "the free publicity was worth $70 million" to Miami.

Sarnoff's numbers are realistic, but the way he presented them at the Commission Meeting was done in a very deceptive way. We can thank Grape for cutting through that BS and reporting the real numbers.
