If crime is actually down why does it appear to be up?

I was happy to hear that the Grove district had the highest reduction in crime through the whole City of Miami last year. Ironically, I know two people personally who had a crime committed against them recently, in the same week.

My friend Jerry had his bike stolen right from in front of the Bookstore, the thieves cut the chain and made off with it. And another friend had her car window smashed in broad daylight near Kennedy Park and the thieves made off with everything that wasn't nailed down, including her hand bag with all her credit cards, money and ID's. I know she shouldn't have left that in the car.

During the First Saturday Art Stroll, those child scammers were out bothering people. This other guy goes around with a list of medications, telling people he has no money for his meds and he constantly bothers people. I have given money myself, because even though I suspect it's a scam, who knows, maybe he needs his heart and cholesterol pills. The guy is this sad sack right out of central casting.

Others are constantly hitting up tourists and locals while they are eating, shopping or enjoying art openings. This sends the wrong message.

You may have seen a large police presence recently at the Seminole Boat Ramp area. That is called Operation Difference. The police department pulls in resources from the entire department and utilizes them to stop crime. It is a very effective tool in keeping our community safe according to Sgt. Javier Ortiz.

If anyone would like to help stop crime, the next Crime Watch meeting is Thursday, April 23 at 7 pm at St. Stephen's Church (2750 McFarlane Road). Parking is free in the surface lot next to the church.

Perhaps crime appears up to you because you are in constant contact with so many people daily. If someone was recently a victim and there you are, the Grape, I'm sure you are a sincere listener so you would hear about these numerous torts, probably at a higher rate than the average friend or neighbor.
