Coconut Grove Elementary School has created a unique "Summer Learning Camp," created to help their students get ahead. The camp's schedule consists of subjects like math, reading and science class in the morning and in the afternoon, students will enjoy art and phys ed.
The summer programs have increased test scores by an 86% average. Four certified teachers are needed at a cost of $25 per hour for 55 days, this totals $11,000 for the entire summer.
The poor economy and current budget crises is affecting the program in that they may have to end it if money is not raised. Comm. Marc Sarnoff (shown here with a student) is asking all to help if they can. New school principal Eva Revelo says that $5,000 is needed for the baseball field, which needs a lot of work. For a grand total of $16,000, a major impact can be made at Coconut Grove Elementary.
Your can bring your tax-deductible donation to Comm. Sarnoff's District 2 office at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive). Please make checks payable to Miami-Dade County Public Schools and in the memo section, please write "For Coconut Grove Elem. Principal's Special Purpose Account."

Instead of those useless tourist stations for, what was it, about $800,000.00, plus pay to those who sit in the air conditioned booths reading a magazine----perhaps some of that wasted money could have gone to the children, but I guess that a stupid thought.
Is that what teachers get paid now?
What does tourist booths have to do with anything? Miami-Dade's school superintendent is slashing and burning his budget during a major crisis. Sarnoff is the only local elected official to step up and help save a school program from having to be cut. Looks like, he is simply asking members of our community to offer a helping hand to kids. Good for him.
BIC is a tax, schools are a tax, so a tax is a tax imposed upon us citizens. The booths came from a tax. What do the booths have to do with school kids you ask-----never mind, you wouldn't get it. Oh hell, why not. Don't allocate tax dollars for these booths, use the tax to help children, get it?
Sarnoff was standing at the new bike rack, big deal, Sarnoff was the one who said no money for artist. Sarnoff is sitting next to a child for a photo op, yet Sarnoff & BIC were for the tourist booths. Are you serious, they cost $800,000.00, worth about $15,000.00, if that much. Is anyone saying the booths are more important that educating future citizens? Waste some more of our tax dollars!
I'm glad I am not buying real estate from you if you think the kiosks cost $800,000.
When the kiosks came Miami had to buy the the streets and then pay to man the kiosks. Look at the books, cost about $800,000.00, per.
Commissioner Sarnoff thank you for caring for the children of Coconut Grove Elementary. For the past few years the school system misspent monies and neglected the children that they needed to care for. It is upsetting we pay so much in taxes that a large portion go for the school system which are so incompetent. Government should remove all those political appointees with fat salaries and provide us the taxpayers with savings in order to contribute to schools and stimulate the economy. I am not joking!
