Nice to see there was no vandalism, enjoy the art
When I first arrived at the bike rack ceremony last weekend, I got there early and I went right over to the bike rack. I saw this -- a can of spray paint right on top of Lebo's bike rack.
It thought it was a little test. I was told that Lebo's art is respected by taggers (graffiti artists) and they would never "tag" his art. Also, the bike rack has a coating, sort of like they have on the NY subway cars, that doesn't allow graffiti to adhere. So it would remain clean.
Then I realized the can said "gloss protection enamel." That was the protection they were using.
I was happy to see that no one tried to destroy or tag the art, but when I went back a short time later I noticed the paint can was gone. But at least the art wasn't marred. Probably one of the staff took the can away, but I found it funny to see the art was fine, and that only the can was gone which I thought was stolen, which it probably wasn't.
Anyway, many of you don't like the rack, but you have to admit, it's a nice piece of art.

Grape, no negative implied when I say sincerely I hope you didn't give someone the idea.
How many bikes can use this rack?
8, but if they add two more rails, it could accommodate 12.
Umm, no one said they didn't like the rack, they said it was a bandaid on a hemorrhaging wound. And even more importantly they said it was a political photo op of the band-aid being applied.
Maybe instead of having a planning committee, hours of work, (i'm guessing) considerable money, and all this publicity, the city could throw out a few hundred bucks to buy some metal, a shovel an some quick-crete, and we could have a dozen bike racks in a day.
Just thinkin out loud here. Sure they wouldn't be pretty, but less bikes would get stolen, and less streets clogged by improperlry chained bikes, while we worked on ways to pretty them up.
Hooray! Gloss enamel! Now all they need are about 10 more cans of the stuff & maybe it will be safe until next week :) Bring in the heavy duty protective chemicals!!!!
I am pleased that so much time and attention has been invested into this new artsy bike rack for Peacock Park. The event had a pretty good turn out and which was a wonderful photo opportunity for some of our local politicians to pat themselves on their own backs (especially the Mayor and his hand picked replacement). Any effort that will help bring more bikers and shoppers to Coconut Grove is a step or perhaps a pedal in the right direction. The Lebo Artistic Bike Rack is a lovely horizontal monolith and even a bit reminiscent of the one in “2001 A Space Odyssey”, if it had been painted by Peter Max. I wonder if any of the politicians attending where able to gain wisdom by touching it? Perhaps all of this media coverage of bike racks will actually help stimulate interest into making the Grove a real Bike Friendly community. Perhaps this attention will help the government powers that be, retailers and shopping center operators to install utilitarian bike racks to accommodate plenty of bikes, and perhaps even establish valet service for those that require more safety and pampering. More bike racks and safer bike paths will be a very inexpensive way to generate more pedestrian traffic and sales in the Grove Village and even in downtown Miami. The real irony of this Artistic Bike Rack Celebration in Peacock Park is the fact that this bike rack could not even accommodate the few bikes that arrived at the event. Lebo Sculpture / Bike Rack is located near Skateboard Park. But most skateboarders do not ride bikes. Most 10 speed bikes will not ride on dirt, rocks, roots or leaves that surround this bike rack. There are 4 bike rack units bolted to each corner of the sculpture. Each unit will hold up to 2 bikes for a total of 8. For better protection these bike racks should be installed with tamper resistant rust proof galvanized bolts. I hope that taggers will respect this Sculpture / Bike Rack and if not then I sure hope that the "gloss protection enamel" will make the clean-up process easier. Lets start figuring out better ways to locate higher density utilitarian bike racks and perhaps even bike valet service throughout the Grove Village that will be of greater benefit to even more folks that live, visit and shop in Coconut Grove. The comments here imply that people think "they" meaning the City, installed this bike rack. The rack was donated to the City by a private initiative of Leadership Miami (part of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce). Their goal is to raise awareness of biking and the need for safe bike facilities and bike racks. I think the comments here prove they've done a fine job of accomplishing that goal and should be commended for their work and thanked for their gift to us. The location is close to a trail through the leaves formed by kids riding their bikes across the park to the skate park and the basketball court, so it should get some use.
The bike rack is cute, but it looks more like a mini-mural with bike rack hardware attached almost as an afterthought, than it does an integral bike rack. I'm sure I've seen bike racks that were sculptural and the "rack" part was a part of the whole, and not something bolted on as an afterthought. Maybe for the next one........
Miami Springs has a number of very artsy colorful bikeracks in all different shapes placed around the city. They are made of metal and a number of bikes can be locked to the actual metal sculpture which is the rack. Some of the racks are in the shape of a dinosaur, bikes, fish, wavy thing, etc...
The Grove will come back to life soon. Meanwhile, is anyone thinking that a person who would want exercise, or have a need to save a few dollars peddling, instead of gas powered mobility would spend their hard earned green saved money to pay the price of a meal, coffee or desert? Isn't such a thought contrary?
No, Jobie. People are contrary. If you're looking for logic, you'll have to find Mr. Spock, because the human race is short on that.
Haven't you ever seen anyone eating a Snickers, washing it down with a Diet Coke? That's a "balanced snack" in human-speak.
