New Coconut Grove map and brochure are in the works

Coconut Grove's Map and Brochure Committee met early yesterday morning to discuss the new Merchant's map and the brochure that will be handed out at turnpike stops and possibly other areas like South Beach, etc.

There were quite a few ideas thrown around, but the main thing is to get people to visit the Grove, probably for day trips. We have agreed that most visitors staying in Grove hotels are here for business and they are here already. How do we get the others?

A sample brochure for Islamorada in the Florida Keys pushed fishing and the fact that they are only 55 minutes away. We considered pushing the fact that we are only 15 minutes away from many places like the airport, South Beach and downtown.

Also, an idea for the brochure might be to tie in images from next weekend's
Snap it in the Grove contest. In fact, the photos may dictated the way the brochure is planned. One thing that is very strongly suggested is a list of yearly events like the King Mango Strut, 4th of July, the Gifford Lane Art Stroll, the Bed Race and all the Grove's signature events.

As for the walking map of businesses and attractions, all Grove businesses should be on the map and of course other local attractions. I took with me a list of items that were left here on the Grapevine -- suggestions by readers -- and we'll add Vizcaya, dog parks, churches, The Barnacle, the Hare Krishna temple and so on.

The main tag line may be: Coconut Grove: Shop, Dine, Unwind on our tropical tree-lined streets. Boutique hotels, restaurants and shops are a priority and bringing the bay and sailing of course would be a great idea. But one main theme is needed. Less is more.

Can't forget the bay, great Waterfront shots can be used, with the boats and parks.. That's one of the things that make the Grove unique, it's not just the shops.. you can also promote biking/skating/boat tours..

Losing the "on our tropical tree-lined streets" portion seems better

Coconut Grove:
Shop, Dine, Unwind

And then have on each page something about each of those three.

Shop - stores
Dine - restaurants
Unwind - bay and bars or bay and parks

Just seems simpler.

By law, there are no "bars" in coconut grove, only restaurants that are allowed to serve booze. Just FYI.

Does that seem strange to anyone else? Why can't there be bars? What is wrong with bars? Why are we letting the (alleged) teetotalers run our neighborhood. SD#2 (the cocnut grove business district) is the only part of Miami with this prohibitionistic agenda. Why?

Awesome! Now the Grove can keep losing that great personality it once had... I'm moving to San Francisco.

If you use shop, dine & unwind, make sure Love Levy gets credit for it. It was the tag she developed when she served in the Sail the Grove Committee back when she was Mktng. Director at CocoWalk.

As it happens "shop, dine & unwind" is a fairly generic tag line that has been used by multiple locations throughout the country. Now it may well be that Love Levy made the very good suggestion that it was an appropriate line for the Grove, but any claim that someone "developed" it for the Grove is a bit far-fetched.
